Human nature is to cling to the happy times of our past. Memories fade though and forget the bad, they only remember the good.

Probably, because much like Graal, there is absolutely no reason all that Classic was should go to waste -- there is plenty of potential to turn it into something nice.

Just recreate the original material?
You can't call it classic if it's not classical.

True but it doesn't change the fact that I still feel 2001-2002 were my best times on Graal, with 2000 being when I started. There were a lot more players then and the serverlist changed much more constantly than it does today.

From what I've been able to tell, though, you can mostly-ignore it for a lot of scripts, can't you? Use it only when it's actually needed for a script... you don't need NPC server for something that walks at the closest player, for /signposts/, etc. >_>

Anyway, let me toss this out there: I'm not an expert with any of the tools. I'm willing to help out in whatever little ways I can, though.

... Unless you try to turn it into another "RPG-style" server with levels and armor and crap. Then I'm going to turn around and never come back, because honestly, there are games that do that sort of thing better than any of the Graal-based things, for my pocket calculator.

Signs are actually serverside too, meaning they use the NPC-server :P Really, it's silly to want to build a server without the NPC-server.

You were also 7-9 years younger back then, if you still have the same mindframe now as you did then, then you seriously need to grow up and mature some. Don't really know how to say that without sounding insulting, so pardon me for sounding so brash.

I'm failing to see the relevance. Because I also enjoyed Graal much more in 2001, does that automatically mean that my mindset has not changed in the last 8 years?

The obvious answer is no. In 2001, Graal was much more populated and there was tons of new content being created. Neither of which are related to mindset in any way, shape, or form. The current stagnation of Graal has made the game nothing more than a graphical chatroom.

Graal has always been a chat room with benefits. You get to go kick the crap out of that person that just p***** you off.

Nelm is entirely correct though in pointing out that the population has declined in general so that in itself will start the discontent in general. People have to accept the fact though that the NPC is here to stay, GS2 is here to stay. The simple fact that I have to insist on GS2 conversions is enough to support that regardless of whether I like it better or not.

@Gambet, not everyone that aged has actually matured

Quests and the prizes offered from those quests are on several different servers now. How will the server differentiate its content from its competition?

Fair enough but people still enjoy the same games they played when they were kids regardless of how old they are. For example classics from the SNES are still amongst the top favorites of many gamers who have "grown up".

During a football game this year, the Philadelphia Eagles benched their starting QB (had been the starter for 9 years or so, taken them to several championship games,) at halftime of a game against the Baltimore Ravens (uber defense). McNabb (the QB) had a horrible game to that point, and the team had been struggling recently during the season. The backup played worse, and the team lost the game.

However, during the week afterwards the coach named McNabb the starter again, saying that sometimes "you have to take a step back to take two steps forward," or something to that effect. The team later went on a late-season run to get into the playoffs and eventually get to the NFC championship game (game before super bowl.)

So what's the point of this football rant? Just like Andy Reed said (eagles coach,) sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. Break down the server, isolate the best aspects, and build on them.

Note: I didn't read the thread and I do not know if it has anything to do with this, but:

Why do you guys think this server will be revived and stuff will be done when it's UC? Stuff wasn't getting done when it was Classic, but you really think the staffs will work?

People will lose motivation, that's all.

Quick off-topic thought.

I was on UN earlier and pondered what the average age of the players is. Someone guesstimated 15, which was around what I thought.

Then I thought what the average age of the classicians (from a few months ago, at least) would be. I thought around 17 or so, then realized it'd be around 21 simple because of Bell. LOLOLOLOL

Signs don't have to be server-side.
My point is that the NPC server should be taken down in order to be able to upload the old levels without converting them.

The NPC Server is a powerful tool that should not be ignored. If they're going to rebuild from the ground up then they need to incorperate it in some way. We'd be making a huge problem for the people down the road if we choose otherwise.

Totally agree. The NPC server isn't going anywhere, and it would be stupid to work backwards instead of forwards.

Not to mention Graal functioned a lot different pre-NPC-server. The player that entered the level would act as a host for all other players who entered afterwards. So laggy host players would mean NPCs would lag for all other players and so on. I don't even think Graal supports that sort of thing anymore.

It's better than building the server from the ground and less time-consuming.
The old content could be appealing to both new and old players.

Of course, if they're guild to rebuild from the ground up they should us the NPC server. But in my opinion they don't have to rebuild it.

Work backwards instead of forwards?
They got rid of most of the content in order to implement the NPC server.

Also, if Classic retains classic gameplay (as it should), the NPC server is not really necessary.

Quality drops, much less future proof, developers constricted by outdated scripting system, and lack of NPC server limits what can be done.

The quality of the old content is much better than the current in my opinion. It would take years of development to reach its level.
I assume developers who care for the server would be able to deal with it once it's done. The server doesn't need overly advanced scripting for classic gameplay.

Also, the lack of an NPC server would make it much easier for regular players to submit their personal content (such as playerhouses).

Both versions (old main and Tyhm period) are better than the current revision (and the direction it's heading).
I personally prefer the pre-heras levels, though I like some of Tyhm's additions.

Though you posted exactly the same thing in his era? I think you're either scared of change or scared of not being able to recreate memories that are not going to come back anyway.

there's no argument you can make to say classic is going in the right direction. tyhm era added content. current classic has less than pre-tyhm.

I'm not scared of change, and I have no intention of recreating old memories.
I merely believe that the old version was superior for various reasons.

I have no problem with new content, but I believe it should be added in addition to the old, instead of replacing it.
