Graal FTP Server

Pretty soon I am going to release a graal FTP server. This server will contain a script database for beginners and people that just need a script. Eventually I will start allowing levels, images etc.

This sounds interesting, but you should probably upload everything under a license of yours so that people don't completely abuse the system.

I plan on restricting it do read and download rights only for the public and having accounts for trusted scripters or players such as yourself to upload or edit. This way the system isn't screwed up and I can help people as much as possible.

Um. Isn't graal.net designed for having code snippets?

Yeah but you have to register. We're way too lazy for that.

I could care less if graal.net is designed for snippets. I plan on having a script database full of hundreds of scripts to help people etc. If you wish to call it a "second resource" that's fine but whatever.

You should care. It's an official resource.

Where do you plan on acquiring these scripts? How do you plan on verifying that those who submitted them to you have permission to do so? What could possess you to think that having hundreds of scripts uploaded will help anyone learn how to script?

I think if it is used tutorically, that's a good idea... but if it is just going to hold scripts and levels for people to use on their playerworlds, thats a no no... plus, even if they are tutoric, people will probably still find a way to use them on their playerworlds...

I'd have to give it a nod in the no no direction...

Help people in what way?
Anyways, this idea has already been used. There's no possible way that this could teach people how to script.

First no I shouldn't care, and I don't have to. I plan on having people submit the scripts to the site which will be then be looked over and added to the ftp server. And having trusting scripters upload their own scripts. I don't plan on verifying it unless someone knows and tells me so, if someone stole the script then it's their problem. It's taking a chance just as much as it is for a manager to hire a new staff member, that could just as easily still material and put it on the server. It may not help some people but it will help others and give them a basic meaning of scripting. Also they can learn to modify scripts and try new things. If your trying to cause trouble it is not going to happen here.

You shouldn't care that there is already a superior way to go about what you're trying to do?

I do not think any trusted scripters will be uploading files to your server.

No, it's your problem - you will be hosting stolen scripts from Graalonline.

Only what you are suggesting is centralizing the process of uploading stolen material!

No, it will give people scripts instead of teaching them how to script. While it is true that a few people will look at your scripts to learn from them, the vast majority of the general public just wants a script to solve their problem. Spend five minutes on UN and you'll understand what I'm talking about. (I get a ton of "Tell me the script for X," "Give me the script for Y," etc. PMs. I then offer to teach the people how to script the simple thing they're asking for, and they immediately respond with "No, give it to me.")

Those who truly are motivated to learn scripting will learn it regardless of whether or not you have your FTP server up. It is not going to help anyone but it will hurt several original authors of scripts by creating a centralized database of scripts to steal.

The only trouble that will occur is if you follow through with this poorly thought-out idea.

Don't do it.

I'll see what's going to happen.

Maybe I won't do an FTP server, but I have a good amount of money to spend and I plan on helping graal with it. I'm open for suggestions if anyone has any ideas.

I have done a lot of thinking and I am going to use the money to pay for trusted and successful people on graal. People that help out in the graal community, playerworlds that need financial help, playerworld websites. I will also upgrade accounts for those who deserve it and or people that don't have the money to afford subscribing, not for people who are to lazy to earn money.

If someone requests money for an invalid reason, the request will be immediately denied. I hope you like my ideas Lance, thanks everyone for the suggestions.

What I failed to realize was that there won't be enough restrictions and it would be helping lazy asses. I'm going to start supporting and financially supporthing things on graal, I will make a web site soon.
