Scripting

I'm just wondering how many scripters we have on graal now. Does scripting come easily for you or was it hard to learn?

Took me awhile to get good, but I liked it from the start so it wasn't that hard to learn.

I was used to mIRC scripting when I started p laying graal, so I could do a couple things easily.. I couldn't do a whole lot, eventually I understood what most of the commands did, got some better explanations from other people (<3 screen_name), and .. yeah.. it wasn't too hard to learn

At the very start it was extremly hard for me. I was 11 and had never programmed before in my life. I remember looking at Bruges Crane Game script when I first started and I about died from envy of wanting to script. Soon as I picked up the syntax it all fell into place.

I'm still learning (got a LOT to learn) but thanks to help from people (Cheetos, Rabid, Tseng, Shrimp) I'm picking up better...

It's a bit difficult at times, and then sometimes easy, too.

Have a background+enjoy Perl.

Scripting here came relatively easy for me, and relatively quickly as well, although it seems every week I find some new way to put it all together to yield more interesting results

I really picked it up when I got hired for Providence in February or March 2002, lots of help from Jagen (whom I helped a year and two months earlier with ultrabasic scripting) and Sage Chaozu (who owns, enough said).

Good scripters aren't easy to find, heh.

Once you learn the basic syntax of C++ or Java, anything comes pretty easy. (Although I have to say assembly is quite a different story @_@)

ya

Once i got the graal level editor open, i looked around and found Ace's scripting guide and other downloads from Graal topsites.

Looking at other people's working scripts is, i think, the best way to learn; provided that you then type out your own script from scratch, knowing how that other script worked.
but the observation of it working in action, and seeing the code, stepping through it, that is so important to learning. Its how people are traned for computer jobs in the real world, and how college courses are taught. My professors gave me code to make data structures for C++ class. And what that didn't give me, was in the textbook.

The scripting forums back in graal. 1.26 and when Thym was the moderator was the best place to learn scripting, becasue of the sharing for the common knowledge base that happened.

I even made an npc command search engine in Perl which is on my website (see link in my sig below)

But now with that egotistocal self absorbed Kaimetsu and his rule to not post complete npc's. that board sucks ballz. Thats just my opinon, which i have every right to express, as does everybody.

Hahaha, I never even knew that the vote took place, and then I came on the forum one day and posted a script to see if someone could do a "find the bug" and got slapped with a topic closure .

The rule is probably for the best though, since it prevents people like me bugging the scripters who know what they're doing.

You see the mean temered response Kai gave me? thats another reason i dont bother posting on scripting forums. theres not enough room for his ego and any other opinions to be around.

I can do some scripting. I don't have much choice either, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I really wish I knew more and understood better some things. That will all come in time, though

I script. At least, I try to.

A few days after I got Graal, I found out the wonders of the F4 button! Several (hundred *cough*) failed attempts at making good levels later, I made a huge room 'o weapons and utilities. That was fun.

Now, I'm trying to get my head round this whole serverside lark. Once that's all done, I imagine I'll try and make my code make more sense.

Hehe. I wanna play in that big room. When people come in:

to those taking bets, you should have seen the multiple page post that kai and i ranted on and on about.. i dont even remember what it was about. All i remember is that we both threw mud, therefore we both lost ground, and there was no winner. it was some months ago.

Saying that kai is self adbsorbed and egotistical is a way of stating my OPINION, which i mentioned it was.

How personally you take someone else's opinion is enirely up to you, some people may have such values as to consider that a compliment; if thats what they want to do with their life.

By the way kai chooses words to reply to myself and others,
over many months, i have formed that honest opinion of him.

Anyone can think anything of anyone else and that is their free choice, wether or not it is nice is of little consequence and entirely subject to the listener.

I doubt that half the people who voted yes on this poll could be considered actually good at scripting *sighs* some people claim they can script but when I've seen there NPCs, I think its more of an insult to the scripting language than an NPC

I feel the same way about a lot of the submissions I've looked over from people applying to graal2001.

Now I will state my OPINION that you are trying to find some way to justify your childishness, but failing miserably due to your lack of intelligence and skill with the English language.
See everyone? in my last post i made no attack on Kai, voiced no addiitonal oppinion of him that would be taken in a negative way, and here he is stating opinions that the majority of the population would see as being against me.

I hold back a vast surge of nasty things i COULD say now that if said, would have no purpose but to escalte the argument.

For my use of the English language, it may be known that I work for a newspaper, in America, and i earned a college degree in communications.

Any opinion stated against my knowledge of the English-American language is based on falsehood.
