Lightbulb some nice ideas for v3

I recently got started with mandrake linux (linux bashers, f-off...) and I came to a fun discovery with v3.

When I logged onto 2k2, I would find that none of the graphics or ganis were loading, so I went into the F2 rpwindow/psudo debugger and made an intresting discovery.

Where the client installed itself, it could not read or write files.

Now I supose one could asume since I'm using Linux, I would know everything and give myself rw permisions to those folders, but thats an unfair asumption.

FIX IT, MONKEYS!!!!!!!

also a working subscreen, a server selector that doesn't crash, and sub windows that aren't constrained to the client area would be nice, ya know.

Not possible in 3.* engine. Set your resolution larger.

I tried chmoding the folders already, but to no avail. Telling me to read the meaty man files realy isn't any help. Mind explaining the commands in some way a linux newbie would be able to use? At any rate, I don't see why it wouldn't be halfway reasonable for the client to work without the user to fiddle with alot of stuff...

Yes, a "subscreen". Believe it or not there are other servers than 2k2 (aka, *cringe* "kingdoms") and era. In these mythical servers, if you didn't mess around with your key config settings, or it didn't have it disabled in some way, pressing Q would usualy open a "subscreen", where you would typicaly change weapons, etc. In v3, windows AND linux, if there are too many items to fit a row, rather expanding onto the next row like it did in the yee olde days, it will instead just merge the excass into one big hairy mess. Call me a nastalgic old fool, but I like being able to use all of my weapons.

It doesn't...?
Yes it does in the linux version. See, it'll just sit there for too long to be reasonable, so I'll close it and open it untill it works (when it does, it only takes a few seconds-minutes rather spaning 10 minutes)... but by that time the game client has screwed up my sound drivers (an error I forgot to mention), so I'll have absolutly NO sound... more than enough incentive for me to reboot, wich is a slap in the face for any *nix user.

I've heard alot that the higher the resolution you give the game window, the more unstable the game is. Besides, I want to be able to do other things with my system. Theres aim... a clock... the occasional opening the command promt to chmod the folders so the client can load an image... a desktop right click on so I can get into the submenu where I stuck the shutdown/reboot link because graal killed my sound....

lots of things that I like to use the moniter for than just graal. Besides, its not imposible to let the window not be constrained from the game area. I've seen it done before alot, and even with "pretty windows", not just your average pop up or w/e.... and with c++, too!!! Well, I'm sure all those exemplamary programs were made by some sort of COMPITENT PROGRAMER.

Anyways, now that you see my meaning....
FIX IT, MONKEYS!!!!!!

What you are calling a 'subscreen' is called an 'inventory window' or a 'weapon select menu' by the rest of the world.

Ahh.. now that I know what you're talking about. That's called the Inventory Window, not Subscreen. This bug is a known one.

Try sticking

NPC Code:
207.44.156.91 listserver.graalonline.com

Into your hosts file... sounds like your nameservers suck, and your box isn't cacheing properly... quite speedy on my end.

Not impossible per se, but those windows in the game are being rendered just like the game, they are not phsyical windows in the X enviornment. (How big is your desktop? I can fit an 800x600 game into my 1024x768 and have no problems....)

:o intresting. How would I go about that (hehe, sorry for b|tching earlier >.>)... could this also be the reason that when I emulate the RC with wine, it can't seem to fully connect with the rc serverlist? Or is it just that wine has a bit of trouble emulating the RC? And if the latter is the case, have you tried winex with the RC?

True, but it would be nice to see happen, regardless. My desktop size is 1280*1024, I think . Its not that I have space issuse, its that the windows being rendered is annoying.
Also, the higher the resolution you set graal to be, the more unstable it becomes.

Take a look at this file: /etc/hosts
I don't know, I havn't attempted to emulate the RC in Wine at all.

run this:
glxinfo

Look for Direct rendering, does that say yes or no? And, by unstable, do you mean it's slower or actually segfaults?

Avoiding the swear filter isn't a good idea either.

I added that line to the hosts file... I'll test it later to see if it helps. See if you can get the rc to work... that would be kewl.

For checking, again I'll fiddle with that later, but to when I say "unstable" I'm mostly fallowing the word of a friend of mine who knows more about it the game than I do, lol.

For the chmod problem
Use this command:
chmod a+rwxs directory
Make sure you are set as root when doing this
Really, there are alot of uses for chmod
The first section, the a, is really just what kind of users are going to be affected by it (a=all)
The second set is merely an addition that sets the permissions for the defined user/s for the first section (since it's all users, all users will be affected by the permissions)
r: read
w: write
x: forgot
s: forgot
Really, reading the man page about the commands will be more easier to comprehend rather then my babbling.

x for files is executable, for directories it is file listing (ls) permission.

ooo I see what I did wrong before... I was just doing chmod +rw <directory>, lol. By any chance is there a way to make it so it changes all the sub directories, too?

Also, I got graal to download stuff properly...

I reinstalled it into my home directory instead where it defaulty installs it (well, default for when you install it in root, wich it seems to need for some reason to install properly).
