I think it should depend on the character.

A wizard character should use it.

A noble warrior should not.

Yes
In a real battle situation, you do not go and fight by sword when you have the ability to fight with ballistics. You may be called a coward, but if you value your life you would know what's best for you

I don't even have a fireball, I only use my sword. I concider the use of NPCs dishonorable.

It's more a question of whether or not it is RPish.

Just think of the fireball as arrows set on fire.
They had fire arrows back in the olden days.

I agree. Though maybe wizards shouldn't use their sword then.:o

Well you know its sort of logical to be able to have some melee attack. Think about if it were real, You can't use your ' FireSpell ' any longer so you use your Cane to hit them =P And when this staff of light comes out, Things will be alot easier ^.^

Yeah, too bad graal isn't more customizable, so a wizard character could have a feeble staff, in place of a sword, that does 1/4 damage.

But of course the staff would have other powers, not just bludgeoning.

Then a wizard character should not use melee weapons in battle.

Yet this appears to be the case in places like Elven. I refuse to abstain the using of fireball unless wizards abstain from the use of swords and staves.

actually Knights used swords not bows
Archers used Bows or flaming arrows
and in Fantasy adventure Wizards used magic spells and I dont recall any books where they beat down knights over the head with there staffs usually they stood back in the distance and casted from afar.
