it opens in dos for a split second then closes....

You drag a .gif file onto it. It changes it to either .png or .mng form.

It could be one of the files where you drag something ONTO it and it activates the program properly.

Try dragging a gif file onto the .exe, see what happens!

Ok look,
take a .gif file,
drag and drop it onto the gif2mng program thingie.
The DOS will open for like a split second as usual,
then browse through the graal folder and you will that a new .png image has been created with basically the same name as the .gif, although it wont be exactly the same, for some reason it tends to replace some of the letter in the word with ~
Anyway thats how it works.

It's not Graal which inserts the ~ in the filename. When you
drag&drop something onto the exe then Windows thinks
its a DOS program and opens the program like when you
go on the DOS prompt / command line and type
gif2mng nameofthe.gif

but because Windows fears that the program doesn't
understand long filenames it would do
'gif2mng nameoft~.gif' or so

Hmm. So if Windows shortens the filename when it passes it as an argument then presumably the program itself reconstructs that filename so it can pass it to the file-handling API? If not, and the API accept the shortened form, then you could always scan the folder for files that match the shortened name and deduce the original filename.

It'd also be cool if it displayed an explanation message when being run without arguments, so that we didn't get threads like this

If you still didn't get it to work, I suggest downloading or buying a Paint program such as PSP or NeoPaint (I have NeoPaint)

You can just open a gif file and save it as a .png file. I don't think .mng works on either program though.

right (e.g. animation shop produces only true color mngs).
I can change it to expand the filename if needed

Neopaint costs money, but for the activation code, they never changed it, so I can give anyone the code if they need it.

I wouldn't advertize that...

a lot of the time people don't know why it adds that (~), its because of long filename support, which is not enabled in msdos...(i believe it was in drdos)..also because a space can create problems, so heres what i suggest.
with windows 98 second edition (or 98, 95, and i believe me) go to your C Drive, copy command.com and paste it in the graal2001 folder. copy your image to the graal directory, run command.com. type gif2mng filename.gif (if more than i believe 7 characters, or contains a space it is filenam~1.gif).
or you could do this:
create a shortcut on your desktop to the gif2mng.exe, it should put the shortcut in double quotes like this, "CProgram Files\Graal2001\gif2mng.exe", all you have to do is outside the quotes put the absolute path name to your gif file (absolute is full path, like Cimages\image.gif) for example this would work:
"CProgram Files\Graal2001\gif2mng.exe" CImages\image2.gif
It should output the .mng file to the Graal2001 directory.
I am pretty sure thats the best way.
