BackUP

they should have an option built into RC and/or gserver that you can backup guilds and levels.
you do like /backup guilds and it will go .. are you sure blabla then you have to type yes (not just click yes) or something.. then it backs up ..

then you can be able to restore it after
/restore levels
then it asks you are you sure and you type yes or whatever
and it will get the ones from backup and put it in the current ones .
this can be very useful ..

oh also the backup shouldnt be accessible through the file system
and there might need to be a special password to recover/backup
so that if a hacker hacks a high rc, they still might not have the backup password and will not be able to mess the playerworld up, then backup the messed up playerworld. Which would basically make the database useless

but it should solve a lot of hacking problems

like passwording it
or only allowing certain IPs to access it?

~AlphaFlame~

Ah... wouldn't just downloading the files on a regular basis do exactly the same thing?

Of course, if the BackUp option was to put them into a nice .zip file... ^_^!

Good idea, however backing up the files daily or every other day would have the same effect. I think Stefan said that all the rc's need to be ip locked... so if a hacker hacks onto a high positioned staff member who didn't lock his rc and who doesn't make backups of the levels, there is no excuse and that is totally his fault. Also keep in mind that backing up the files would double the amount of files, which would double the amount of space used on that server, and if you have a big playerworld that could be tons of files and space wasted.

Tyhm has a spectacular aura about
...unless you count that the total sum of levels, graphics and sounds for Classic comes to 68.7 megs.
So on a 12 gig drive...how many backups could you have before running out of space? 200? ^_^
Yeah, the big worry would be processor load. I say alternating weekly backup. Every saturday, it writes to either Backup A or Backup B. In the event of a disaster, the last backup can be recalled. In the event of a disaster right when the backup is being made, the other backup can be recalled. In the event of a disaster going unchecked for an entire week, you're too stupid to be allowed to run a PW in the first place.

OOokay, so when all your quest bosses, doors, and tiledefs are replaced with porn, that's not gonna be an issue?

well,
images are stored in web gifs so you will most likely have a copy of a correct one.
