Tilesets, Transparency, and Layers?

Dusty worked on a project year(s) back where he converted a portion of the default tileset to work with transparency and layers. This project was never completed though it was very promising; in my opinion it would have pushed tilesets and servers closer to supporting layers. Has any work been done to continue his work? Is there something similar to what Dusty put together? Is an artist in the community willing to put some time in and (re)create it?

This is Dusty's tileset if you have not seen it:

Even tho it lack's the ability to draw layers above the player, you can still make some amazing levels with layers for sure.

I'm not a coder but couldn't you just assign the tile to be transparent through the color you pick. Like have it check for that specific color and then change the alpha on it? It would only work online but it's a start with transparency.

Just an idea like i said i don't code so i don't know if that is possible or not.

It's a bit of crude idea but you could always use showimg and changeimgpart referencing the tileset image to draw over the player. Or you could even go one step further and write a player weapon which will read the level file and automatically does showimg(so you don't have a messy level filled with tons of npcs) depending on the layer although that would require more work and an extended tile editor that supports the new tile layer.

Yeah but I would rather the process be more native. I hate the idea of having to draw images like that tho. =/ Maybe one day we will have support?
