What happened?

Ok well I've recently started to play again after quitting for a short time, I come back and see everything has reduced in price by loads....Back when I played shipka went for something crazy like 6 million, now it's only something like 2.

Can someone fill me in what happened?

I think the reason was because of all the auctions, then money became harder too get.

Also, 2 millions in $ is pretty much right now.

The price of things has decreased; this was intentional and was the goal behind all the auctions.

Money on its own is almost useless once every player has an AK or better.
Players generally trade guns for other items, and money is usually used as a sweetener. Anything with a value above 50k is rarely sold directly for money.

Take, for example, a gun that was once sold for 200k which might be worth "1.2mil" now (Gun A). That 1.2mil isn't a real figure and I don't think that anybody would ever buy or sell it for 1.2mil in cash.

Another player might offer a gun that was once worth 250k, but is now worth "1mil" for it (Gun B).
Usually a straight trade would be considered because the difference of 200k is offset by the difference in the initial price. If you projected the price increase of Gun A onto Gun B then Gun B comes out with a value of around "1.5mil".

Because there are so few of these guns if a straight swap is made then Gun B's value would be seen to have risen from 1mil to 1.2mil, because the person who received the gun isn't going to sell it for less than perceived value of the item that they traded it for.

The logic: Because Gun A was worth 1.2mil and he traded it for Gun B, then Gun B must be worth 1.2mil now also.

Mid-range guns aren't affected as much. Mostly because there are more of them available. If a seller asks for too much then the buyer can decline and simply buy it from somebody else.
But I also think it is largely attributable to the price spread of guns available in the mid-range.

If you have a 1.2mil gun then the next best gun might be worth 1.6mil (400k difference).
If you have a 50k gun then the next best gun might be worth 60k (10k difference).

When it comes time to sell your 50k gun, you're going to try and get as close to 60k for it as possible, so that you can upgrade immediately, but if you ask for too much then the buyer might just leapfrog you and go straight for the 60k gun.
When it comes time to sell a 1.2mil gun something similar happens, but in this case there is a lot more room to ask for more.
In this way the price of mid-range guns increases slowly, whereas the price of high end guns increases much more quickly and we start to see guns increase in price from 200k to 400k to 800k to 1.6mil over the course of 2 years.

what I don't understand is why people don't realize that when you auction off items, you may be removing money from the economy, but you're replacing that money with an item that's equal in value. if you auction off a gun for 500k, you remove that money from the economy, but now an item with the value of 500k is put right back in which pretty much means you've accomplished nothing. the person who bought the gun can still use it in trades for high value items because like demisis said, a lot of people trade items for other items rather than items for straight up cash.

Yes they did accomplish something...they lowered prices. The point of removing money wasn't to make the rich poorer, it was to increase the value of money. People who didn't participate in the auctions (poor people) have the same monetary amount of money as they did before the auctions, but after the auctions that same number increased in value and could buy them more than it could before.

you lowered prices of overpriced guns for players that are already rich. I can't see the mid-price range guns going down in price because the auctions didn't effect the money pool of middle class players, and honestly that's all that should matter this way it's not impossible for new players to afford decent guns. I'm probably not making any sense right now, but I still stand by my statement that auctions is a ****ty way to solve things. (refer to the picture that vimes posted)

There were enough auctions to effectively decrease the money supply, therefore increasing the the value of the dollar for EVERYONE. The items that were sold were just taken from banned players, so nothing new was introduced.

Prices are noticeably lower for every weapon that isn't sold in a shop somewhere. Sure, the auctions might not have solved all of our problems, but I'd say they turned out to be a pretty decent solution for the problem they were intending to solve (high prices). Read the original post?

Frankie has said what I was thinking as well.
Guns like P90, Famas, Sg552, Daewoo, M4, etc. don't seem to have had their prices effected by the auctions. The only things that have been effected were guns that were already trading at crazy prices (6mil, etc.) and even then I'd wager that it had nothing to do with the money supply and more to do with the supply vs demand for those guns and the artificial trading prices.

If Shipka was 6 mil before, and you could trade a Shipka for 2 DRs, that puts DRs at about 3 mil each.
If you auction a Shipka for 2 mil, that is going to reduce the price of the Shipka, but it's also going to reduce the "price" of those 2 DRs to about 1 mil each.

This is the effect that we saw as a result of the auctions.

lol what? People don't rank items based on what they're worth in other items, they give them a number (50k, 100k, and so on). If someone trades 2 DRs for a Shipka, it's not because a "shipka is worth 2 DRs", but because a Shipka is worth 2 mil and a DR is worth 1 mil. We get the numbers for items based on what people offer us, and if there's less to offer that number goes down.

From my own personal experience, everything has lowered. I can pay less for just about any gun (I've been on merchanting my items everyday for the last week or so) and I'm also getting offered far less than I used to for my items.

The price changes could very well be from some other factor, like duping (increase in item supply), but it's a simple economic principle that a decrease in the money supply will increase the value of the dollar. I'm just going by the facts, and the fact is that there's far less money than there used to be.

I still don't think Frankie realizes that we sold items from players that were banned. Therefore, no, we aren't bringing in items worth 500k into the economy since they they were ALREADY in the economy.

being in a banned player's possession, wouldn't that mean they were no longer in the economy?

If anything, that keeps the prices rising. The only way that works is if the guns are also sold in a store.
