Onion Village

Thought I'd try a more 'professional' test of layers, to see if they were really as useful as I had imagined. They are, even with minimal support. I love it! My goal was to create a level without any NPCs or custom tiles. I decided to make a village... sadly I suck at urban designs like that, so it's not finished and I have no idea where to take it.

Cool stuff but it's important not to abuse the layer system on stupid stuff like those hammer stakes on the roof top. :P

It's a custom tileset. You had to make some of the tiles have transparency :P.

:P All of them. It's actually a full(as far as I can tell) conversion of pics1 to something compatible with layers. But stop nitpicking!

Layers have been in Graal for a while Just no way to edit them without doing so via wordpad(which sucks) until Fry came along.

I think this is about near final. I don't plan on changing anything unless someone has some advice/critique.

I'll admit that it is a bit busy and abusive with the layers(though I do like the stakes on the roof!), but I want to use the level as showcase for layers at the same time. My attempt was to make a level aesthetic and promote layers... and I don't think I could have really showed the true potential of layers without going a little overboard. I mean, a town sign or two doesn't really scream, "I'm using layers!" but instead the same ol' same ol' NPCs. While a whole level filled with typical objects like signs and fences drawing over each other is a little more convincing.

The shadows are the most notable in your level IMO.

I've always wanted to use layers. However, I don't know how and you don't really explain how you've done any of this.

Can't link it here, but uploaded the 0.1.7 version of Gonstruct with layers. Note that you need to actually have transparent tiles for it to be any use, maybe ask Dusty here for his set. Also apparently the current Graal version is pretty unkeen with PNG alpha channels, so you will probably have to wait till v6 until you can fully use layers.

I'll probably release the current tileset I've been using in the graphics section. I haven't had the time to work out various kinks it may have(as I originally made it without the ability to actually test it in action). However, like Fry said it's currently unusable with the Graal client, but I may work on one that is... sadly it will probably not have dynamic shadows which will greatly limit a lot of the flexibility and usage. Right now I can use mostly the grass objects/tiles for every terrain, instead of having different tiles for each terrain. Without alpha blending you'll still have to have different tiles when it comes to anything with a shadow in it.
