It's a balloon, and it's shaded perfectly fine (the one I posted). What else do you want.

Just because someone puts something on dA doesn't mean that's how something should be done. I'm sure all of your example balloons would look just as good without the dithering. Quit defending your suck, you get called out on every forum you post this trash on. And we normally don't start calling you out until after you try to justify how bad it is.

Lol, I guess you didn't read the entire thread then.. maybe if you were smart enough you would have. Why don't you take another look at some of the posts.. pertaining to where I got the examples from.

I myself dither my work when I come to have a plain surface, or just some depth I need to show this way, but never with a balloon...gawd.

Balloon # Hot air balloon !
Look at the 1st hot air balloon you posted, the animated one
It's not dithered entirely
Also I believe the dither on the 2nd one (big blue one) is only to show the depth in it + because of the light source.

1.)dithering shouldn't be used on rubber balloons.
2.)dithering should be used sometimes on rocks and other objects with a texture.
3.)hot air balloon has a different texture than a rubber balloon.
4.)shut the **** up.

I'm no graphics artist, but I do know that rubber/latex balloons should be shaded differently than hot air balloons (which are made out of a synthetic fiber). Listen to the people here, they know what they're talking about.

Dithering, like most techniques, does not simply boil down to "use it or don't". Some people can pull it off, most can't. Just because someone else can dither a balloon and make it look good does not mean the suggestion not to dither a balloon is not a good one. It's not black and white, but for most people the best suggestion is to not do it, simply because of the effects dithering can have. Dithering, like on the balloon, gives the impression of a rough surface... a balloon does not have a rough surface. Rocks have rough surfaces most of the time, so ideally it would be okay to dither a rock.

How well dithering looks also depends a lot on resolution, contrast, monitor... I used to have a CRT and I dithered a lot... and it look good because of the way CRTs work with colors and all. Then I got an LCD and dithering almost always look bad... the only time dithering looked nice was when I did very low contrast on the colors, because LCDs are so crisp and clear. I also find myself critiquing dithering much more. Same applies to resolution and contrast in different ways.

Dithering is to show texture, however not on natural materials. Nature is unpredicable on how it looks and does not follow a pattern, dithering is a pattern of pixels, therefore if you were to make a rock you would not use dithering because rocks hold no pattern.

Thank you.

I think I improved on the table. The right one is small fixes. The one on the left is well, a bit more then a few.

Need to see more of the top, I like the smooth style, but I don't quite like the shadows or whatever you have going on that's sticking out the side... ah, forgotten transparency?

No, I forgot to turn that part white again lol. Also, for the right one I only changed the top and the shadow. Nothing else.
