Vaporware Awards 2007

If I could, I would nominate Graal 3d for the Vaporware awards 2007, but I still don't know if it takes the "Duke Nukem Forever" path, or the "Stalker" path.

It would be nice to atleast see screenshots, maybe a updated beta, because it seems, atleast at the moment, that there is no progress at all.
As user-rates seem to be stagnating, and Graal 3d used as excuse for no development in other areas, atleast send a lifesign, and if its a new screenshot .

Well there's shareware, programs that can be tried, freeware, free programs... nagware, programs that nag you to pay for them, and I guess vaporwares, programs that fade into nothingness like vapor?

You can nominate it. Just let Wired.com know...

And Rapidwolve: Vaporware is software, or hardware that's hyped up over and over again by a company but is never released. Some famous examples include Duke Nukem Forever, and the Phantom console (until it was cancelled).

Some staff can already play Graal3D so its definitely not vaporware
We plan to release some interesting things soon, there is a lot of new things to release, but like we said before we cannot give exact release dates yet.

A time scale would be appreciated though. This has been said over and over for a very long time now. It almost has no meaning!

What you mean "Almost", kemosabe?

Yeah, I think we've got 2 issues here. 1, there's the camp that Just Wants G3D, No More Promises of "Coming Soon" GIVE US THE HAWTNESS! and 2, there's teh camp that Just Wants The Excuse To Die - we couldn't care less about G3D, we want (...) and part and parcel, we want Stefan back so he can work on our (...) list of projects. Which we're sure are much more interesting, important and profitable than any "dumb Ocarina Of Time ripoff".
I'm the second camp, but this is a discussion headed by the first camp. Keep your definitions everybody, there will be future discussions on either topic...

who cares about graal 3d really.

Players cant even make a good 2d playerworld, god forbid they get to work on a 3d one.

The gameplay for 2d worlds is almost non-existant, go play a big game if you want playability

Oooooh! Angst to the max!

At any rate, I bet Graal3D would be more successful than you think.

Same here. Why the hell do you compare it to Graal 2D dude? Did you even think about it? Its totally different, thats a new game, maybe later with a bigger community and peeps with much more skill in developing playerworlds..

Just because you (the head coder of the project) say this does not make it any less of a candidate for a Vapourware Award

The company that's developing it had an ad for some hiring they're doing if I'm not mistaken. It had a small, lo-res image in it of what the project supposedly looks like as of 2007.

I think you misunderstand what I was trying to say or maybe it was just the way I conveyed my message.

I dont doubt that a Main graal3d server made by graalonline developers (Stefan, any other paid?) could be good.

Im going to address the rest of my reply to the next guy.

Do you know much about developing a 3d game? or 3d based playerworld?

I know I dont, but I have a feeling that it would take a lot more work then developing a 2d game/playerworld. Therefore it seems only logical that the turnout rate for completed 3d playerworlds would be lower then 2d. (Look at some of the extremely talented staff teams who have come togather and failed, for whatever reason and yet in how many years weve only had what, 4 playerworlds make the cut? 1 which is left standing?).

At the end of the day, you are paying graal to develop, sure as a 2d hobby its fun, but developing something 3d to be seems almost commercial grade, Who in their right mind would pay to give away commercial grade development ideas?

Conversely, how much would you pay for a complete suite of game development tools, web and game hosting, and advertisement in a convenient bundle?

Graal's got a great idea it's selling poorly - Graal as a game is kinda middling, Graal as a development platform has promise, Graal as an engine AND hosting service...you just can't get that, Java's not gonna host your game, C# isn't gonna let you use their upgraded accounts database at any percentage...

But I digress.
Graal3D Might be cool. There are a bunch of times in 2D levels I wish I coulda moved the camera for a 3D change-up. If they make it easy to port 2D to 3D (as in, "Here's the overworld...okay, this is the interior to this house...this is what's on the second floor...I guess the chests and beds are normal-height..."), BOOM, instant content.
But who can know the mysteries of Stefan's mind? He'll tell us what he'll tell us, and until then he'll tell us to not worry, it's a surprise, he's got it all taken care of. And I'll complain that I don't have much faith in that, as usual, and he'll impress me and I'll apologize, as usual, Eventually.

Between 150-250 dollars depending on if I wanted a 2d game or a 3d game. Granted that dosent come with an entire dedicated community (though im sure people would check out your stuff). I suppose also it dosent come with the web/server hosting needed to make it completely online.

The rest is there, and thats not a bad price considering you dont ever pay again unless you go commercial.

See, I have trouble discussing what Graal does and doesn't provide, because I'll say "It would be nice if you got webhosting space and the ability to put some code on your page for people to buy a MyWorldIa account (a graal account, really) from You, and You get a cut of the profits/discount on your next server bill", and then Unixmad gets all mad and says "What you say!? It already is!", and then I get confused, because maybe it is, or maybe he thinks it is, or maybe it Practically is, or maybe the intention's not getting across (one way or the other)...

But Graal should. Drop the whole "Kingdoms and Friends" thing, make it "The Graal Platform". That way they're making money two different ways: "Selling"/renting the platform and "Selling" Kingdoms as the Official Content. It should be like Nintendo putting out a Mario game for the Nintendo Platform, right? It's not the Mario platform...you don't go to Nintendo.com and just see "Mario Wii! Sign up now! Also: Other games here."
