Developing the Ministry of Magics

apprentice, sorcerer, wizard, archmage... whopee... how dull.

First, we need to improve the names a little. Then, figure out just what the Ministry of Magics will actually DO other then cast spells at things, what RP background will they have, what will the advancement requirements be, that kind of thing.

To start with I'm thinking of Shaman or something to replace Sorcerer.

What could they do? Shamans could cast long range spells to make people hurt themselves?

Don't forget the origin of the current names. They were bland names hastily thrown together to set up the final format of the ranking system. Fully intended to be replaced in the future.

I'm trying to avoid things like necromancer or illusionist because the name would then force a narrower band of RP then I'd like. I'm not going to have individual Fire Wizards or Lightning Wizards, just "Wizard" and let the person add the Fire or Ice or Dark on in his own personal playing experience and RP development.

Perhaps since I roleplay as an Orc, a Shaman rank can be added. Though, I am pretty bad at making up my own lore, there is many other MMORPG's, where Orc's have the ability to become one with nature, and control the elements. (Which you know I do, with my Lightning spells ect.)

Ranking System
---------------
Controller of the Voodoo ( or something. )
Shaman
Adept

Shaman's aren't always Voodoo. A similar rank to Shaman would be Seer, but that's more lore orientated then magic orientated. Think of it this way. I'm looking for a good "archetype" names for magic student, good magic caster, powerful magic caster. The Archmage is a special rank for the ministry leader and is sort of a special case. You don't have to worry about requirements for that rank.

Orc Shaman would be an individual RP rank under the archetype rank of Shaman. You could address yourself as an orc shaman, but to keep the rank system trim and understandable, I would not actually make the Orc Shaman rank.

I was toying with the idea of Apprentice, Shaman, Spirit Shaman, and Shaman King, but that would A: Leave Apprentice the odd man out B: Way too many Shamans C: Too many people view Shamans as being withdoctors, voodoo practioners, or medicine men and would create too much of an RP bias.

I wasn't saying a rank "Orc Shaman" But the Shaman in general. I feel it fits my character quite well.

Alright, so Shaman for the magic ministry (corresponding with monk for the religion ministry) that sounds pretty good. What comes after shaman?

Shaman is a decidedly religious term.

Ah yes, spirit shaman. Using the full powers of the esoteric self, the 'spirit' to gain metaphysical power over the physical elements.

And which shaman are you referring to, Googi? Native American shamans may have had some decidedly religious overtones, but Voodoo shamans believed and practiced very much in worldly magics, not just diefic powers.

(However, since prayer and prayer casting would be an important part of the magic guild (both being spells of some form or another) they perhaps shaman IS good)

Maybe you don't understand what a shaman is. A shaman acts as an intermediary between the natural and divine. It's doing that that makes them a shaman. Maybe there were/are some shamans somewhere that "casted" some "worldly" magic. Maybe there was/is also some shamans who ate olives, but it's just something they did, it isn't what makes them shamans.

Native American shamans didn't have religious undertones. They were a religious tone. They were religious leaders and spiritual healers.

If it really matters to you that much, the term is Eastasian in origin, but I'm not talking about any specific groups of shamans. I'm talking about the definition of a shaman. If the "Voodoo shamans" or any other "shamans" do not fit this definition, then they aren't shamans.

This proves to me that you're far too intellectually biased to be able to give any decent suggestions, information, or even debate. I'm ignoring you now for this thread. Now that you've said something that abysmally stupid this whole argument is beneath me and I can stop arguing it.

I think he's just trying to get it right. Also, I think it gets him hot and bothered when someone says something like 'its not religious'...when...you know...it is.

Come on man, this isn't like the Ministry of Religions thread where I exposed how ridiculous one of your core policies was. This time all you had to do was go to dictionary.com after my first post and you could have avoided looking like a fool.
