'Globe' technology

A neat feature would be to make gmaps be able to act like a planet, like, if you go to the left edge of the gmap - you automaticly see the 'other side' of the gmap and can walk into it, instead of just using links at the edges.

I agree, should be an option for when you make the gmap or something. Maybe a real globe ?!

Can't you just do it by linking the top levels to the bottom?

I mean like

123
456
789

Links:
1 is under 7
2 is under 8
3 is under 9

and oposit, then make a map.. that will link it there and make it nonstopping..

Tyhm has a spectacular aura about
Two things:
One, if you make a map that links like that, you can't See 3 from 1.
Two, if you revise the map to be
97897
31231
64564
97897
31231
You have at least two copies of every level, confuse the hell out of the game - but at least you can see the next level if you're lucky enough to be in the Middle Nine.
Three, If you make actual copies of the edge levels, ie
ighig
c123a
f456d
i789g
cabca
you can see the Tiles of level 9 and 3 and 7 from 1 (reflected in their clones, levels g and c and i), but you can't see the PKer that dashes across the World Edge to slash at you and then dashes back.
Further, in none of these situations can you shoot an arrow over the edge of the world and have it wrap, etc.

Four, spaced intentionally, TheWorldIsSquare. Only on toroid (donut-shaped) planets can you both travel so far to the east that you wind up at the west AND travel so far to the North Pole that you find yourself at the South Pole. Assuming you want a Classroom Wall map, where you go north from Canada and find yourself in the Former USSR, or where you go cross Antarctica and go from South America to Australia. In such a case you either need a world where you can rotate every level north-to-south so someone can continue going "Forward", or a special case for If you go off the north side of the planet, turn around and be warped (1/2 the width of the planet in levels) to either side.

And yes, I did plan on using such technology for Classic, so of course I know these things. :-P

I was just thinking about how to do it.

Lets say this is a normal GMAP:

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

I know it's possible to linke 3 to 1 and 9, and so on and so forth.

But what if you added an extra ring of levels arround the main gmap that looked like what would be on the other side? Like this:
9 7 8 9 7
3 1 2 3 1
6 4 5 6 4
9 7 8 9 7
3 1 2 3 1

The inner ring of gmap would just link to itself while the outter ring would just be there to look like the other side and give the illusion that you just wrapped arround. Would that work?

Weird, I coulda swore I just said that...and no, it wouldn't, GMaps freak out when they have to put a player in level7.nw and there are four level7.nws they could mean. Sure, there's only one copy on the server, so it's clearly not gonna screw with the links, but if memory serves it always shows you Only in the First Occurrence. If it showed you in all 4, this could work.

Let me explain myself a little better..

The levels are:

123
456
789

That's a map. There is no other levels and will not be.

Thing is every level have 4 sides, which links to other sides..

So if you link the right side of level3 into left side of level1 and so on around the whole thing, it will become like this:

123123123123123
456456456456456
789789789789789
123123123123123
456456456456456
789789789789789
123123123123123
456456456456456
789789789789789

Bolded levels are originals, the others are the same, it's just that it links there.. it's like a loop, it's not adding any more levels.. I fail to see why this would not work as it's regular graal links.

PS: I'm naming this theory for "Hyper-Cube Linking" since.. i'm cool.

Hmmm displaying is probably not the biggest problem, but npcs might have problems when trying to chase a player or so (e.g. you are left of the npc but your x coordinate is higher)

Because then its a dead stop at the edge (visually)?

Then make the outer levels flow with the opposite sides, and when you press M have a custom map revolves around your fixed middle position.

A flying system could also have been scripted, however building it right into graal is much easier

No it couldnt have. Can you change the 'zoom' factor of tiles with a script? No.

...the point IS, it's silly to say an idea is useless because there's a hypothetical way to script a reasonable faximile. I mean, by that rationale, why did Stefan bother scripting GANIs when you can just do that with showimg? Why bother making baddies in the first place when you can just script moving NPCs?
And in any case the example holds up - you could script a custom map, and it wouldn't be as smooth; likewise, you could make a custom flyscript, and not change the Zoom factor of the tiles in question.

BUMP

Please don't let this idea drop low.. if it does bump it. Keep it fresh... this idea is brilliant and would make GX look a bit more realer (expecially for planes etc..)

Yeah...how does Flying tech work when you hit the edge of teh w0rld? Black border? Does it force you to slide to the side?
It should wrap instead, the end. :-P

People shouldn't ask too much about the flying tech

I think if you made a link to the other end of the world, the gmap would get messed up (looping around in an infinite loop) or it would show "the end of the world" which isn't good looking either.
