Sanstrata staff 5 years ago

Found this on my hard drive ... good group of folks.
The level was last edited in 2001. The first stages of sanstrata development were done in summer 1999, nearly 7 years ago ... and the dream lives on.
This screenshot was with the second revision of the overworld, where you could get a space ship and fly to another planet.

Give a shout out if you see anyone familiar!

One thing Sanstrata and other servers did "when graal was good" was a quest piece around every corner, rewarding you for exploring around a bit, finding a piece of a larger puzzle. Events are great and all, but theres something about those little quests that make games fun.

It must have been after I left, as Prozac is owner and DV is on the staff team.

A lot of familiar faces though. A lot of people I know that I didn't realize played Sanstrata too.

My ex (who got me into Graal) played there, as well as one of our friends. My ex was Disturbed and the friend is Sloth.

Abyss is also one of my good friends who played there.

I've heard so many stories about Sanstrata.

Sanstrata was started in the summer of 2000 when someone invited Sabin over to my graal version 1.28 gserver Argos running off my win 98 desktop at the college dorm (then freed up a port for me). (and i have not used the 1.28 gserver for years, since Stefan asked me not to and explained why not.)

At first, Sanstrata (Sabin picked out the name, it means no lines, or no boundaries, ie. no limit) was going to be a water world, but we scrapped that idea.
Then, perhaps a world of demons to attack, but that plotline seemed too dark (tho i did make some pretty good baddy demon npcs - long since lost those files now). Then I wrote the story of Gorkak and the scattered shards of the orb of light, and it is upon that story which the quests are built.

I made just about all of the old quests, Sabin made the overworld levels.
Sirus made the snow town ... not sure where either of them went off to now.
Sanstrata Classic (if you have gold) is a project I am currently helping with, there has usually been the theme of starting in the test server, trying out stuff, then going to the main world.

It was and hopefully will be a grand old time, but most of my focus is on the Argos (can see a couple levels if you have gold) is server that I wanted to make since before Sanstrata was even formed - and i have a plethera of ideas for it written out and how to make them work, am presently working on the overworld.

now, share your sanstrata story (or stories!).

i remember a lot of good sanstrata times...i remember how i got hired for my first position there. I was running around and i kept getting glitched on stuff so I asked if i could be the bugs admin to look for and fix stuff like that XD. i also remember when i took manager position riot and i uploaded a test overworld (tritan) so we could update things on the main-world and sanstrata soared back up to the top of the playerworld list for a good little while. It was the most playercounted PKing server. God it was crazy..lol

When I started Sanstrata Jinx was manager and I had never heard of Prozac. Then news of "new sans" came around and I was like "omgomgomg".

It comes out and Prozac is the manager. I remember my first reaction was "WHERZ JINX" but I learned to live with it. New Sans wasn't good. Sure I had some fun but now that I think of it, it was a failure. Then Sans had a steep downhill route where it came out with new ow's over and over and over, each worse than the one before, and had new managers like every week.

Then, like most servers even today, they settled for the OLD classic sanstrata map but that failed too.

I was ET when it first came out, quit graal for like 3 months, came back got my job back and was there each and every time it got "hacked" until Stefan and Nemesis decided to just close it down.

Atleast I think that is what happen, that is the impression I got, then again I was only 14 at the time.

All in all Sanstrata ruled. I remember the little jumping thing, heh heh heh, and the car. I only started playing on it soon before it was shut down.

haha I remember it being "hacked." Everyone would log on and see what new npcs the "hackers" added so everyone could pk and cause trouble.

ah yes Crono, i remeber that transitional time when it was going downhill .. i was working two and a half irl jobs which is why i handed management over to Jinx, then back to me, then my biggest mistake was to hand management to Panny, and she is the one who requested it be shut down - like 3 or 4 years ago after so much hacking went on with it.
This was in the days before npc servers, when everything was clientside.
Now i know how to make npcs much more securely and store certain variables serverside and in database npcs, or in serverr.variables if need be.

This was also back when uploads were done with ftp, not through rc, so when the ftp name and password leaked, the overworld and basically everything got deleted five times in three days or something.

and browing through my website, i found some other old memories ...

http://www.figmentcode.com/sanstrata/indexold.htm
from the 2nd version of the playerworld that was not as good as the first.
Some good pics in the screenshots browser on that page tho.

also, a more official story about what happened is here
http://www.figmentcode.com/sanstrata/about.htm
the nav bar on the left of that page is still mostly working
so u can see where we were going with the story.

oh ya, ubermass. he was the evil sith lord to my jedi mastery - and much of his destruction is what snowballed into the server getting shut down way back then.

And the car, (in above post) you mean the one that you could drive, and then pick up other passengers (players) and drive them around the world, ie. give them a tour without them having to do anything?

ya i made that npc just before g2k1 (bomby moon) released the train npc, which i hadnt even heard of when i scripted that car. and i made it mostly with server flags in a short timeout .. and in gs1 .. but now i know better lol

Trunks. I'm almost certain he was GP Captain, eh?

Well, he was my irl friend, who introduced me to graal. He has commited suicide in late november because of a girl. If anyone would like to know the full story you can forum PM me.
