Why incorporate things like shading if you're not going to use correct perspective? If you're going to do crappy perspective, do crappy shading.

Your door has NO detail on it, and each side is basically a flip of the other. There, 15 minutes of work in photoshop.

Also, he did a lot to fix the door that you should take note of, mainly the perspective issue with the arch itself. Lines can make a lot of a difference. In this case, they turn a boring door with uninteresting features into a unique door, and fills a lot of the empty space. A few lines can make a lot of difference. He also did a few other changes that make a lot of difference, even if small--like lightening the lines on the arch on the lighter colors.

Haven't gotten around to fixing it though, I'm lazy when it comes to graphics...and...everything. I do think you got too dark around the bottom of yours though...but yeah, I need more detail to be sure.

A good photo should have a full range of tones (from black until white). I personally believe it's the same with graphics.

Oh, well, I know. And on my original one it does have that. At the lightest part it's nearly white and around one the edges between the blocks and the wooden door it gets nearly black. For the most part, everything that has any sense or realism about it has very very light and very very dark in it. You just have to use it right. My main goals recently in GFXing have been learning that balance as well as blending stuff together right. Because, realistically, I shouldn't need to use outlines at all. I'm trying very slowly to get used to that.

Realistically, and that's the key word - because these are graphics for a game which is cartoony by nature. Just take advantage of it and be excessive in some spots, like mine - I used excessive dark spots to create atmosphere.

Also, you didn't have any true blacks (#000000 in hex) or true whites (#FFFFFF). This is your original modified so that the blacks are true black and your whites true white. You'll notice a huge "visual" improvement over the original.

Well you don't very often find "true black" and "true white" in real life. And I try and mix both realism and cartoonish style together...and then you get whatever horrible graphics I come up with. Probably due to the fact that I can't successfully do realism nor cartoonist styles.

But in my honest opinion in your version there the wooden door looks rather shabby, I don't like it too much. The block arch does look a lot better though. I started working on some improvements of my own. I'm basically redoing it but using the same pallet and just adding on. I will post when I'm done. I do appreciate your help, though. I'm used to harsh advice.

Your brain adjusts your irises so that there is true white (highest tone). True black precedes this, with the assumption you don't live in a light box. Hence the photographic theory that a good (practical: portrait, landscape - not abstract) photo should have a true black and true white in it.

It's your door, with some lines - the only major change aside from perspective is the windows and shading near the bottom.

But I wouldn't be too picky, I spent 15 minutes and you can see my changes are fairly drastic overall. Unless ofcourse you're referring to the second door in which I simply adjusted it to contain true white true black... I didn't change your door, I just adjusted the levels so they were correct. Any other problems were there before I changed the levels.
