Reminds me of that server archaic.

Angel_Light 12-16-2007 06:21 PM

reminds of the first level of shadowgate

Jeffyy 12-16-2007 06:33 PM

I like the arch of stones... but the doors, look a little weird.

coreys 12-16-2007 07:43 PM

Some improvements:

Elk 12-16-2007 08:35 PM

looks really awesome 7/10

Kyranki 12-16-2007 08:46 PM

Love it.

Codein 12-16-2007 09:08 PM

It's cool. Not keen on the texture of the wood though.

Felix_Xenophobe 12-16-2007 09:23 PM

Really nice.

Why incorporate things like shading if you're not going to use correct perspective? If you're going to do crappy perspective, do crappy shading.

Your door has NO detail on it, and each side is basically a flip of the other. There, 15 minutes of work in photoshop.

Pimmeh 12-17-2007 09:11 AM

Errrr.....theres a fire behind the door? Or what? I dont get it Stephen XD

I only see that you drew some lines

DustyPorViva 12-17-2007 10:05 AM

Stained glass.

It has more character and more umpf to it... But the stained glass / fire is really off.

DustyPorViva 12-17-2007 11:01 AM

Also, he did a lot to fix the door that you should take note of, mainly the perspective issue with the arch itself. Lines can make a lot of a difference. In this case, they turn a boring door with uninteresting features into a unique door, and fills a lot of the empty space. A few lines can make a lot of difference. He also did a few other changes that make a lot of difference, even if small--like lightening the lines on the arch on the lighter colors.

I did that last, I was losing patience with it - just be happy I didn't go with the plain slightly textured blue glass I was originally going to use :P

coreys 12-18-2007 02:34 AM

Yeah, well I already knew what you were talking about, Stephen.
Haven't gotten around to fixing it though, I'm lazy when it comes to graphics...and...everything. I do think you got too dark around the bottom of yours though...but yeah, I need more detail to be sure.

I think I might start it over a bit, though.

Well no offense but, its kinda like ***** @ your copy and paste job on the stones. For such a pro thats a rather silly mistake... don't you think?

A good photo should have a full range of tones (from black until white). I personally believe it's the same with graphics.

...IT'S THE SAME DOOR, KNOB. lol...

fail. Also, Jeffy's behavior is precisely what I was talking about when I commented to Codein, "It's very easy for young people to stick up for one another when they think someone is being needlessly critical"... following it up with, "But when you get your diploma, I'm sure your opinion will change" - or something of that same effect.

Oh, well, I know. And on my original one it does have that. At the lightest part it's nearly white and around one the edges between the blocks and the wooden door it gets nearly black. For the most part, everything that has any sense or realism about it has very very light and very very dark in it. You just have to use it right. My main goals recently in GFXing have been learning that balance as well as blending stuff together right. Because, realistically, I shouldn't need to use outlines at all. I'm trying very slowly to get used to that.

Realistically, and that's the key word - because these are graphics for a game which is cartoony by nature. Just take advantage of it and be excessive in some spots, like mine - I used excessive dark spots to create atmosphere.

Also, you didn't have any true blacks (#000000 in hex) or true whites (#FFFFFF). This is your original modified so that the blacks are true black and your whites true white. You'll notice a huge "visual" improvement over the original.

Right, helpful advice and technical criticism instead of "that's nice" or "that's bad" is just awful...

So much so I often question our existence when people have to be so helpfully cruel. Productive comments ftw. He may not appreciate it, I don't know - but don't forget I'm taking the time to not only explain in technical terms but create examples to illustrate my points.

Well you don't very often find "true black" and "true white" in real life. And I try and mix both realism and cartoonish style together...and then you get whatever horrible graphics I come up with. Probably due to the fact that I can't successfully do realism nor cartoonist styles.

But in my honest opinion in your version there the wooden door looks rather shabby, I don't like it too much. The block arch does look a lot better though. I started working on some improvements of my own. I'm basically redoing it but using the same pallet and just adding on. I will post when I'm done. I do appreciate your help, though. I'm used to harsh advice.

Your brain adjusts your irises so that there is true white (highest tone). True black precedes this, with the assumption you don't live in a light box. Hence the photographic theory that a good (practical: portrait, landscape - not abstract) photo should have a true black and true white in it.

It's your door, with some lines - the only major change aside from perspective is the windows and shading near the bottom.

But I wouldn't be too picky, I spent 15 minutes and you can see my changes are fairly drastic overall. Unless ofcourse you're referring to the second door in which I simply adjusted it to contain true white true black... I didn't change your door, I just adjusted the levels so they were correct. Any other problems were there before I changed the levels. ;)

Whats a woman :( I am unfamiliar with this species.

Tigairius 12-18-2007 08:30 AM

Stephen, your stained glass looks like it has shadows around it, and that it's floating on the door almost, maybe change the outstanding shadow around the glass to something that makes it like the glass is embedded inside of the door, rather than on the outside of it.

Go nuts ;)

WanDaMan 12-18-2007 11:01 PM

It does look like flames behind the door, horrible colours for the curtains I'spose!

Although, I do like it. I like all of the versions tbh... Goodjob evry1

And Tig, he was just making an example, he didn't intend to make a serious GFX I'm pretty sure.

Hmm, very peculiar.

Basically - I wanted it to be presentable, but I wasn't worried about long-term usability.

Despite your obviously thorough speculations, people still enjoy games beyond the age of 18. I'm 21, I enjoy administrating and trolling Graal. I'm male, and I'm from Canada? Anything else you want? Maybe we can discuss it privately.

I don't really see how one can be proud of their age - it's not really an accomplishment until you're pushing natural limits, like... 150?

My parents aren't divorced, so my mom's basement is also my dad's basement, that goes both ways (incase you're curious).

Anyways, I actually live on the first floor, and my parents live on the second - our house is split in two. But I guess we can discuss that in Private Messages, since you seem interested.

But on the subject of being a loser, I think I've just made it clear who's really the loser here. :p

Jeffyy 12-19-2007 05:03 AM

If you didn't realize i corrected my self and deleted the post and said it was dumb. Sorry...
