Swear Filter

Recently the swear filter was changed; previously it would repalce any curse words in chat with stars (**), now it has a more moral reminder for the person to be more conscientious.

While I don't mind the idea, the practice isn't very well executed. When you use foul language in your chat it replaces your entire chat entry (perhaps a well thought out sentence with some offensive language just for humour) to the conscientious reminder that, perhaps, you shouldn't curse anymore.

Personally I am not against the message - but rather I would prefer if instead of replacing all of your chat to the reminder it went back to censoring the content with stars (**), and sending the reminder to your hud message. The hud message, ofcourse, being the place where you get comments and information.

I've had a few complaints about it, and I just wanted to bring it to the attention of others to see their opinion.

People treated the swear filter as an excuse to swear as much as they want because, hey, the swear filter will catch it for them. This is not the desired attitude, so a more creative approach was taken.

Agreed, and I think it is a good idea.

Ah, so this is more of a means of coaching the player to reduce swearing rather than filtering (though it does both).
Then I admit, it's a good idea

Swear filters promote swearing way more than they prevent it. By having a filter you remind people that there is something they shouldnt be doing, and thus they strive to do it much more.

The current behavior Zero Hour is referring to is the swear filter replacing your entire chat line with a reminder that you should not swear.

This is the more creative approach to deal with the situation you (and I) mentioned.

That seems even more aggrivating to me.

I for one do not enjoy having my text whiped whenever I say something that someone thinks isnt appropriate. Who makes the decision that a WORD is not appropriate? Maybe we shouldnt even talk at all, after all, someone might think that it is offensive.

I also like how someone decided that some words are considered bad , and some were not. Especially when anyone can consider them all to be questionable. Its another display of what happens when some sicko thinks its fun to play high and mighty.

Censorship is what causes many problems. If a group of people, or one person even, can stop you from saying something, then are you free to express yourself? Take away the swear filter already, its just another pointless infringment of our basic civil rights.
