Well, its my first levels since a few months. Ofcourse, as you can see it is NOT done yet, so don't talk to me about "the water is undeep, make is deep". Because let me tell you a secret, I will >_<

Just wanted to show the idea of the level. I'll post it again when its done

Looks awesome-o so far.

Pooka 02-08-2005 06:28 AM

It's a nice level, but there are a few things I don't like about it and think you could fix ;)

First, fix the cliff tiling. Especially the joins where the cliff turns to run down the screen, if you look you can find the proper tiles for that area.

I don't much like the way the water comes above the cliff either, it looks like the water's running uphill and water doesn't really do that.

Otherwise, it's nice and simple. Straight to the point and nothing flashy. Just how I like it :D

Oh and I got your PM, I'm thinking things over and I'll get back to you when I've had some time to think it over. Things are kind of busy for me at the moment.

WanDaMan 02-08-2005 12:34 PM

Ya, he used to teach me things here and there. Here is an updated version. Please give me some commants of the cliffing

Crono 02-08-2005 05:06 PM

Deep water looks good, cliffs are ok but nothing special.

haunter 02-08-2005 10:34 PM

Your ability to join cliffs at the corners, or lack there of, makes baby jesus cry.

(read: The parts that Inspiration circled on the cliffs still arent fixed)

Crono 02-09-2005 06:16 PM

It's not only joining but right under where the grass goes there are dots. There are tiles to fix that. Try to fix it and if you need help just ask. That's what we're here for.

kabouter 02-09-2005 06:25 PM

"Help...!"
Please give me some advice on the cliff tiling since i'm not a hero in that.

Crono 02-09-2005 06:30 PM

I highly recommend going through the pre-defined ones and just cuting it apart. It helps me a lot. If you want me to post a level then ask.

kabouter 02-09-2005 06:39 PM

I posted the pre-defined parts and the bare basics of what you do with them. I wont tell you exactly how to do things, fix the back-side, or connect somethings. Just like Wan taught me, you'll just have to practice yourself and find out. I sure did ;)

Edit- Oh look we cant upload .nw's, for gawd knows why (   ) so too bad. Looks like I'll just use a screenshot :/.

forgot to post an atachment the first time lol.

Kaimetsu 02-09-2005 07:24 PM

The water looks like it's supposed to be a fractal. I have never seen that kind of formation in real life.

kabouter 02-09-2005 11:05 PM

So I quess you compare graal with real life?

When I make levels, I like to picture real life areas when I am making them, try to make things look as real as possible

Moonite 02-09-2005 11:33 PM

hmmm I put some tiles together and if it looks good I keep buildings with those Untill I made a House :]

I can still see a repeated tile error in those predefined matchups.
It seems most people miss this little detail and while my fix isn't a perfect one, IMO it looks better than leaving it as it is.

Crono 02-10-2005 12:44 PM

That method creates a disorder in the lighter orange line though.

Inspiration 02-10-2005 12:51 PM

The distort doesnt really look as bad as the other though

Depends on the person really. I think the one I have looks ok.

zell12 02-10-2005 01:38 PM

The Graal tiles are full of errors, and need to be fixed anyway. :/

Do not be so obtuse. You built your level with the intention of it approximating real life. In the lower-right, is that a random spattering of blue tiles, or is it a pool of water? You've approximated cliffs, trees, dirt patches and even a house. Are you going to claim that these shapes were not at all influenced by the real world?

All I am saying is this: If you are to build a place that mimics reality, at least do so in a sensible manner. Complexity isn't always a good thing.

Crono 02-10-2005 06:10 PM

He built the level with the intention of making it look like a graal level :3

Well, not really. When I make a level, I make a level. I'm not thinking of something i've seen in real life. As you might conclude from my last post, I do not compare graal with real life. Some do that, well that's there business.

So the stuff in the lower-right really is just a blob of blue? But then why did you refer to it as "water" in your initial post?

kabouter 02-10-2005 06:24 PM

Omg, lol..

Well, let me give you some "hints".
- Its blue.
- When you get in it you get wet.
- You can swim in it.

And btw, I wanted it to look, well, extreme..is the good word mayby.

I'm aware of that, although the second of those is somewhat suspect.

I still do not know why you chose to refer to it by the name of a real-world substance. Just coincidence?

kabouter 02-10-2005 06:29 PM

Why not?
I wanted it to look bit extremly, so thats what I did. I'm not going to lissen to people how the level should look like before i'm going to makeit :S

Well, it is a little misleading. People already understand the word 'water' to be a reference to something in the real word. You should call it something like 'blugoop' or whatever.

I do not know this "extremly". What does it mean?

kabouter 02-10-2005 06:37 PM

Well, something like lot of curves in it =).

Crono 02-10-2005 06:41 PM

Who cares if he's refering to a real life substance, he's not refering to how grass and water compare in real life, he's simply placing real life object such as grass and water from real life then using Graal (NOT REAL LIFE) to "connect" them.

If he is, he contradicts his earlier sentiments.
If he is not, he is wrong to use the word 'water'.

Whether or not you care about either contingency is up to you.

Why refer to them as such if they are not intended to resemble the real-life counterparts?

Oh I'm just arguing @ irl in levels.

He put water to resemble water. He put grass to resemble grass. However here is where the border cuts between real life and graal. He uses the (what I call) contrast tile (grass to water). That can be used however he wants.

Incomplete. It used the water and water-edge tiles to make a semblance of a pond. But because he spoiled it with his fractalling, it doesn't look anything like anything.
