There's a little analogy I make every now and again, and it goes a little something like this:

There's a door, You're in one room, and a man outside has an axe. you want to get out, you don't have to. And you get ****y and stick your neck out a little too far, and sometimes he sees you, sometimes he doesn't. When he does you say to yourself " Oh crap I stuck my neck out too far" and then bad things happen, sometimes you say "I sure am happy I stuck my neck out too far"

I think in his case it would be "Oh crap I stuck my neck out too far."
