Oasis Environment

For a few days I have been working on the Oasis environment. Oasis will have a realistic weather system, and constantly changing environment.

For weather, there will be rain, snow, sleet, hail, and wind. Also I hope to be creating an actual "sun" that will travel over the land for day/night effect. The sun's position will also adjust the shadows of things, such as trees. There will also be various non-visual weather effects like drought.

The environment/landscape will also change with weather and seasons. Wind will make the leaves on trees move around and also blow small things around. Seasons will change and so will the color of the plantlife. Changes are gradual for each season, so for example, summer will have a step by step progression to fall.

I have attached an example of casting shadows and different leaf colors. I would also like to announce that the contributors for Oasis are:

Loriel - scripting
Birdbird - graphics
Falados - scripting
Konidias - a little of everything

To make the sun and the different alignemts of the shadows for the sun would take a long time. o.o
Once I get my new computer, if I ever do x.x, I'll be sure to check your server out when its done.

Well the world will be in a gmap but no 3d terrain, allowing for the "sun" to pass over the entire land effectively. The shadow casting system is simple. I made a test of it last night with the mouse as the light source

To be honest, I really don't know. But I would imagine it would end up being Gold. I feel it would help get Graal more upgraded accounts to get some high quality playerworlds on the Gold list.

It's all up to Stefan really... all I know is if it starts on Classic, I would predict it would basically take nearly every player from other servers.

I think it would fit up there nicely with Gold though, as 2k2 is 3d terrain RP, 2k1 is 2d terrain adventure, and Oasis is 2d terrain RP. If there was a server that was 3d terrain adventure we would have a mix of everything.

Sounds decent.

Not so much of a new idea, but it's "new" since we can now use shadow functions with lights.

Be better in classic.
We want to set a new standard for player worlds and by the small amount I've seen, Oasis should be the player world to do just that.

I was going to tell you it wasn't a leaf, it didn't look right sticking out like that. Besides, if you look closely, its bigger then all the others.

Dynamic positioning for shadows? Hmm, interesting. I'm guessing you're using image rotation, but it'll only work for simple symmetrical objects. Might cause problems for complex things like fences.

Image rotating - rotating the image (45 degrees, 90 degrees, etc) in something such as PSP or Photoshop. Basically, it changes the direction, like door.png, and "doordown.png" and so on.

Won't work too well unless you have simple symmetrical objects -
if the image is too complicated in direction(als), then it won't turn out too well when shadowed.

Not necassarily... making like, a shadow template of the image and doing small rotations for each frame would result in a pretty realistic shadow. I don't see what the image being symmetrical has to do with it because it isn't flipping the image to the other side, it would basically be rotated in a graphics program.

Oh, right. I thought you were using GScript's inbuilt rotation stuff until I realised that it doesn't exist yet.

Right, however I'm not sure I'm going for y positioning either... Right now the sun would rise in the east, travel over the land, and set in the west. The shadows would only change x position depending on the sun's position. Y position would be funky for the most part.

Depends on your point of reference. The base of the shadow never moves, but the top moves in both x and y dimensions.

Well what I'm trying to say is that I am just using a copy of the object image as the shadow. So there is no skewing or stretching. Thus it doesn't move in both x and y or it would involve those.

Hmm. There should be some stretching and skewing. Imagine a fence that looks like this: ‡‡‡‡‡ You can't just rotate the fence image or it'll look wrong. You need to skew it.

As for the coloration of the leaves... are you using changeimgcolor? I would.

I'm not using changeimgcolor because the coloration wouldn't be as good, and it also antialiases the image.
