How can I get lights to show, using showimg, correctly when it is dark?

I use seteffect( 0, 0, 0, .7 ); then I have to show the lamps. But when I show the image, the image is darker, and hardly bright at all. Currently I'm showing it at a screenx instead of levelx, but that is very laggy becaues it has to be moved so much.
