Shading

So I was trying to think of what I could make for practice and for some reason I settled on making an anchor.

I've been trying to get the shading but for some reason maybe due to how long it's been since I've done anything I can't get the shading right. I'm trying to figure out how to make the top part have the apperance of a donut shape with a curve in it. As well as the bar in the middle and stuff to have a curved look to it. I'm sure you guys know what I mean.


I'm trying to figure out do I do dark on edges and lighter as it gets to the center or one side light one side dark etc..?
