2x scaled graphics

Just about every server to date has used 1x, 'full resolution' graphics on Graal. That is to say that everything is zoomed 100%.

But would you play, or have complaints, about a server drawn at half the size(think Super Nintendo resolution), and scaled up?

I ask this because:
1) the resolution isn't a disservice to graphics at all. You can still create amazing art at lower resolutions.
2) It can be somewhat easier to produce more graphics at that resolution, to try to make graphics in the resolution Graal uses. Why? Because the higher the resolution, the more space you have to fill. That doesn't mean lower resolution is easier, because you have other problems to overcome... NOT having enough space to portray what you want.

Either way, would you have problems with a server using 2x graphics? I think the biggest problem is the unaware may either associate them with 'bad graphics' or immediately think they are stolen(as most 2d graphics ARE stolen from console games, which need to be 2x'd to Graal's resolution).

I dunno how I would feel about it, but my gut reaction would be that it probably wouldn't look that great.

posted that some months ago here I think...
I'd love it, as SNES is rescaled aswell

know what'd be awesome?
a real TV effect where colors blend into others and stuff...

my opinion in an artistic view is, especially as pixelartist, is that when scaled to higher resolutions, it enhances the effect of pixelart, as you see the various techniques and other stuff within the pieces, may it be sprites or tilesets...etc
its a completely different experience

aswell, as far as productivity goes, thats like 400% more
100% less work, and another 100% for composition and color theory

Not sure how well this would look. Graal's image scaling is, in most cases, very poor.

I just won't see how that would improve a server at all. Sure it looks fine when playing on a old fat tv and all that. I just don't see the point in doing this on graal...

Theres games for Xbox that are pixeled, what's the point in that?

What's the point in playing a pixel game over a 3D game if your PC can do it?

=D?

Less work, more graphic output, can look better in some ways, different from other servers graphics.

Err... players would be redone in 2x as well(and I don't mean resampled). Why would I mix and match stuff like that?

This is about new graphics, not redoing default or anything...

I'd love it. I always liked 2x scaled pixel art, it just looks awesome.
Also, Elk, if you want that effect on your computer, try out the ZSNES emulator, it has an inbuilt NTSC filter which does the job quite well.

Here is where a graphics artist and a players opinions collide.

In these generations of dev scalling up resolution is just too old. Graal DID do the same thing with zelda tiles but pics1 is not SOO bad. Obviously people have come to accept pics one.

As a gfx artist, wanting to show the pixel art is obviously pretty common but other people wont share the same opinion.

For playesr basically you can spend 6000 hours doing pixel art of a peice or on a tileset. If it doesnt look right or it doesn't look good, as far as normal players are concerned its crap.

Players dont want to see the pixels anymore they see it as lazy or just lacking over showing art. Unless the wohle game is meant to be pixelated (maybE) it would get more accepted.

I do also have xbox with live and the only really pixelated games are the arcade games based on flash games. Even at that its the crappiest games on xbox arcade that are pixelated. (i beleive)

So in my opinion, yes it would bug me if a server still used scalled tiles. Its not like its hard to make 16x16 tiles.

You know you've got my vote for a 2x server
I love the look. Plus, imagine if this was made for the iphone... keeping the files that small would cut the size for a portable game nicely!

I've thought about this as well, i.e upping the resolution properly. I think it would look good but require a lot of work.

I beleive its still going to be the same size file. Its only the image itself that would be more pixelated.

Not if you save the images at their original resolution. Then you just have to scale them up 2x and you've probably saved half the space. Also, given that lower resolution typically means better color management, there's some space right there as well. However, space is negligible these days, but still rewarding to have smaller file sizes.

Honestly, it depends on the graphics. The kinda thing Elk posted, yes, that's amazing. But 85% of Graal's Graphics, prolly not.

Did you originally understand this to be "lets take our current graphics, resize them to half their size, and show graal as it is now but pixelated"?
