Nicely done, but I still have something for the MS Paint guys that can't afford Photoshop and just want to rotate by 45°.

Note: The hotkeys are for the English version of MS Paint.

1. Obvious step, open MS Paint.
2. Open up the image you want to rotate and select it.
3. Press Ctrl+W to open up the stretch/skew menu and stretch the selected part by 140% vertically and horizontally, basically increasing the size of the image. This has to be done to have the correct size after the rotation.
4. Next step: Important! Deselect first, and reselect the enlarged image! Open up the strech/skew menu again after selecting the image, and skew it horizontally by 45°.
5. Again, deselect the modified image, and reselect it. Stretch/skew menu again, skew vertically by -26°.
6. Almost done! De- and reselect the image again, open up the stretch/skew menu one last time, and stretch your image horizontally by 50%.
7. You are done, congrats :]

The world would be a horrible place if the only way to legally use a rotation algorithm was to purchase a Photoshop license.

Rotation is bad... it should only be used for reference(50% lightened in the background and drawn over).

whys that? :o If you fix it up it should look 95-100percent like the original. If you redraw it, you'd have to match everything up again...

He is using a very simple image(and I must say, a very bad example for this kind of tutorial, give the random black outlines and such) for his tutorial. Rotating anything with a lot of detail and work would result is absolute loss of control and just mess it up.
In order to come out with a better outcome, you best just put the effort into actually drawing the other sprite... I mean, come on, you're only doing two images here. One straight, one diagonal. You end up just rotating them for the other directions anyways, it's not that much work.

I see/understand :3

But in the end, its all the same. Though, if you draw it over it might be a tiny bit better looking, while if you rotate it and fix it all the way through, it would be a little faster, though not as good looking (perhaps). It all comes down to perception. :o

Exactly... do you want to get it done fast, or do you want to have a better end result? To be honest, it's not that long either way. Like I said, it's just a matter of drawing one image or two... two... is two really that much more for much better quality?

Paint.NET wins.

Step 1: Open the image
Step 2: select the "Move selected pixels" tool
Step 2.5: turn the quality to "pixelated"
Step 3: Right click the image.
Step 4: Drag to 45 degrees.
Step 5: Redraw the few distortions

You could also highlight the image sprite rather doing the entire image, that's usually easier.

If you rotate a pixelated vertical/horizontal sprite to a 45 degree sprite its edges will be smoothed out and therefore its not pixelart anymore, thats the whole point of this tut xD

i tryd the paint.net, it was quite easy, but kia forgot that u have to switch back to the "Move selected pixels" tool.

and u mist some steps,
  1. Open the image.
  2. select the "ellipse select" or "rectangel select".
  3. select the part u want to rotate.
  4. select the "Move selected pixels" tool
  5. turn the quality to "pixelated"
  6. Right click the image.
  7. Drag to 45 degrees.
  8. Redraw the few distortions

more like that if u want to do it on 1 img not split it up
ps: sorry if i missunderstod you.

heres my outcome:

I never really rotate. I find it much easier just to redraw the extra sprite :/

Normally, I'd just rotate it, then I'd fix it up using the non rotated one as the target form, and the rotated one as the stencil for the angles.
I'll try these tips next time.
