Question Clientside? Serverside?

Hey, I'm a pretty good scripter, but i have no idea how to use clientside and serverside:grrr:... can anyone help me?

Oh, by the way, how do you set your avatar? I've tried to, but i cannot see the selections. Does it have anything to do with how many posts you have?

If you were a pretty good scripter you would know the difference between clientside and serverside.

Hmm.. serverside, clientside.
Can't you see the difference?
You should know how to work with both since you are so good.

I don't think so. It depends on what level you're assuming "good" to be at. If your expectations are high, then more and more scripters are going to fall under that level the higer and higher your expectation is.

Perhaps he used to script well back in the day before npc servers were added to all the servers, and now he is confused about serverside scripting?

Um, I don't think anyone can call themselves "pretty good" scripter, with the exception of a very few people whom I am priviledged enough to know.

serverside scripting isn't an extra option anymore, it's practically become a necessity, I wouldn't call anyone who doesn't know serverside a pretty good scripter
(Plus the fact that he also posted on how to get the number oh tokens, any 'pretty good' scripter should know practically all the basic syntaxes)

I know it's a necessity. But what I'm trying to say is that you can do without it (usually, by this I mean offline scripting. But even then, that's restricted by soo much). He could be pertaining his skills around that, thinking that he's good by only these skills.Or maybe he isn't. Who knows?

Perhaps. Maybe he just hasn't scripted in a while and forgot about how to do these things, and needs a refreshment in these connotations.

Again, this is you're view of what makes a scripter 'good' and what doesn't. Anyone can think otherwise.

Personally, I'd decide whether or not to assign a 'pretty good' rating based on skill, not knowledge.

I'd have to agree with that. Someone can possess a lot of knowlege, but have little skill with it.

Now back on track, you can't call yourself good or pretty good without knowing more than the basics, clientside and serverside have now become the basics.

Hardly, you don't have to work for a server (or rather just have access to a server) just to be a good scripter, I've never scripted anything for use with an npc server, yet many will vouch that I'm a better scripter than alot who have. Would you say that someone who understands everything about Gscript except for string arrays to not be a "pretty good" scripter?

I ment more than most basic commands. I never said something about working on a server, but I see your point. You should atleast know the diffrence between clientside and serverside to be considered decent. It is very obvious that he dosen't even know the diffrence between the two.

If it's obvious, then why is everyone stating this over and over again? I think we got it the first time.

By 'Pretty good', I meant that I knew most of the commands and syntaxes... most. Tell me something, how did YOU learn how to use clientside and serverside? Oh, and thx Deek . Anyway, I DO know that there is a difference, the only reason that you think I don't is because I put both of them in the same sentence, somebody just tell me what they are, what they do, and how to use them.

Knowing != Understanding != Applying

A "pretty good" scripter would be able to do all three to a "pretty good" extent.

Anyway, clientside is merely what is handled by the client, and serverside is merely what is handled by the server.

Well whatever, here are some documents that should help, their mostly old, but the commands.rtf is updated as far as I can currently get it so this should be of some help.

If it's so obvious, Tseng, then why is this person being judged on his knowledge rather than his skill?

Knowledge of a field generally antecedes skill in that field - yeah, you can't judge someone's scripting skill based solely upon their knowledge, as someone can know quite a bit yet be unable to apply it practically; however, if someone doesn't know all that much about the field to begin with, how can they have the skill?

Regardless of all of that, "pretty good" is relative. To them, for one to be "pretty good", one must possess at the very least a certain amount of knowledge in the field, and among the required knowledge (in their minds) to be a "pretty good" scripter is knowledge about clientside/serverside scripting. *shrugs*

People could still be good scripters before the NPC Server was introduced :-p

If he can solve problems and understand concepts and all that stuff then he's a good scripter, and he can develop all those skills without ever touching an NPC Server.

Nowadays, i doubt you will get a job in any server (except Classic) without know how to work with an NPC Server.
Skill & knowledge are different things in my opinion, he may be very skilled but got no knowledge about NPC Server, personally, i'd consider a pretty good scripter who got these both abilities.

Mh well i don't want to brag but i'm a bit "skilled". Ofcourse, i'm not really much compared to NingNong, Kaimetsu, GilTwist, Lance, Stefan, Jagen and probably osrs too, but i can script a bit.

With skilled, Lance probably means making shorter and better scripts, well, i can if i want to o.o
Anyway, serverside and clientside...
I read that document from Dach (before he posted, but in .txt), and i now understand clientside/serverside better. I just read the file, looked at a few scripts and now know most of serverside. It isn't that hard.

But, what i want to say is that, first of all knowing serverside doesn't has to do that very much with skill. Look at Kaimetsu's 3d-thingy. And, serverside is easy to learn and implement. K, thxbai.

It's obvious that the meaning of 'skill' here doesn't actually depend on who can use the most commands but who can use commands more efficiently. I mean, it does require at least some significant amount of skill to be able to use all of the commands, but it takes skill to use them efficiently. The goal here (I believe) is to possess the ability to be able to make scripts that run as efficiently as possible without all of the naks (poor use of system resources and bad function calls, etc.) that a script could possibly bring up due to bad programming. The better you are at peforming this 'ability', then the better skill you have at it overall.

Kaimetsu's 3D sphere wasn't meant to be put up on a server. He didn't need to use serverside/clientside calls if he didn't need them.

No, I don't. Shorter scripts != better scripts.

More efficient scripts = better scripts.

Clientside is merely what is processed by the client. That is not the same thing as only affecting said player, though.

The different between Serverside and Clientside is :

Serverside is calculated at the server in the location where its placed. too much serverside makes the server laggy.

Clientside is calaculated at your home computer. So all clientside cannot be seen by another people only the resulst "can" be shown to other people.

To make Serverside dont type on front //#CLIENTSIDE
if you are making CLIENTSIDE
make a
//#CLIENTSIDE
if you want to make both in one script make

Script of Serverside;
//#CLIENTSIDE
Script of Clientside;

Good Description ? Yes XD

No.

Calculated? Not really the right word for it, plus 'too much serverside' wont make a script lag, it depends on the coder.
