Tutorials

I've been trying to improve my level making skills recently (hoping the collab will help a bit), and I'm trying to figure out how to make cliffs. I have never been able to do this.

I have been looking at this tutorial: http://forums.graal2001.com/forums/s...threadid=47797

Yet it seems to be leaving out some steps.

Perhaps now that we have a new moderator who has brought light to these forums, someone could make a better tutorial, or explain to me how to make cliffs?

EDIT: With trial and error, I've gotten this far (see attachment). I'm stuck as to what to do now. I will try in the morning to fix this by looking at other levels people have made. Note this ISN'T for the collab, just a test.

It seems like there is no tiles for it, but they are there. Trust me

Can you post the level? I'll do a step-by-step fix and post screens.

I'm actually going to make tutorials starting from the bare basics to advanced stuff over the summer.

Alright, let's start from the bottom. A lot of the answers to cliffing puzzles are actually in the pre-defined tiles. Below is a useful one.

Name:	pstep1.PNG
Views:	145
Size:	72.4 KB
ID:	44813

From this we can cut out the following...

Name:	pstep2.png
Views:	151
Size:	73.6 KB
ID:	44814

That is the basic pattern. In the situation below (where you turn the cliff that way), the skinny part goes in first, as shown.

Name:	pstep3.png
Views:	158
Size:	72.9 KB
ID:	44815

Following after it is the fat part, which you already had, which is then followed by another skinny part. This makes the pattern you saw on the pre-defined one.

Name:	pstep4.png
Views:	142
Size:	73.0 KB
ID:	44816

This next point is minor but the base tiles of that pre-defined cliff I slapped onto the level should be used on your cliff. Like so...

Name:	pstep5.png
Views:	137
Size:	72.9 KB
ID:	44817

Now, the problem with the side is that your last straight one was chopped in half! Move the whole thing after the chopped part up by one tile...

Name:	pstep6.png
Views:	146
Size:	73.5 KB
ID:	44818

And fit the missing half...

Name:	pstep7.png
Views:	134
Size:	73.1 KB
ID:	44819

The blocky sand tile-error can be fixed by going into your tileset and picking the tile I have highlighted. Place it where those blocky things are and you'll get a smooth cliff.

Name:	pstep8.png
Views:	131
Size:	101.3 KB
ID:	44820

You probably know about the shadows but I pointed out where the tile is on the tileset anyway, which gets you to this nearly error-free cliff.

Name:	pstep9.png
Views:	151
Size:	101.8 KB
ID:	44821

These last few are a lot easier than the confusing lines make it look.

Now, the base after it curves needs this special tile. Once again, pre-defined tiles own.

Name:	pstep10.png
Views:	137
Size:	74.5 KB
ID:	44822

Now we just fix the rest of the base tiles...

Name:	pstep11.png
Views:	141
Size:	74.7 KB
ID:	44823

Which leaves us with this tile-error free cliff!

Name:	pstep12.png
Views:	140
Size:	69.4 KB
ID:	44824

I know it's a bit long and possibly confusing/boring but my real tutorials won't be like this. This is just a quick fix for you cbk1994.

Thanks! That helped a lot!

I am now completely stuck on the transitions I tried to make (I don't know how to describe them :o).

Care to explain?

PS: Why did whoever made pics1 lay the tiles out in such a weird way? To confuse me?

You can blame that on Stefan. The pics1 tiles are ordered after the Zelda Online ones, which were ordered by Stefan (as far as I know...but tbh, who else would have done that).

To be fair there's no real way to do those. Everyone has their own way of doing it. I'll fix some of the errors then finally show the different ways.

First we start with the shadows and corners. There are two shadow tiles, and two corner tiles for each direction.

As you can see, you did the shadows on the right correctly. It's just the corner which needs to be corrected. On the left side, I think I made it clear enough.

Below are 2 things I sometimes do with that cliff direction.

I recommend the one circled in green...

All you need to do is push the tile I circled in red up to the tile I circled in green.

(a few of those screenshots were kinda mis-cropped in paint, didnt notice until looking through them again. oh well)

Type-1 just seems to make so much more sense.

It's kinda weird how water, lava, jump, blocking, and non-blocking are all mixed together.

EDIT: Crono posted right before me, I will try that now. Thanks!

Haha.

There's only one error. On the top left you see that bit that is pointing out? Fixed by using the top left of the corners I used.

Stefan made pics1. I already asked in another thread. He did the original one with the plain grass. Koni did the new grass and the revamped version we saw with the release of 2k1(the current pics1).

I think the current pics1.png came out way after 2k1 was released. Unless 2k1 was released late 2001, then yeah you're right.

Heh, this is what I was telling you I made custom tiles for on msn, just for this to tile correctly.
