The only place they can be gotten from is the pet task.

Interestingly, on 2K1 apples were the only thing you could grow, and on 2K2 you can grow a bunch of different stuff, but not apples.

It looks likes the best way to get a bunch of apples is to pay a person who hasn't done the quest yet.
