What are key codes based on?

I've tried to find out what the key codes used in GScript are based on; without luck. Is there an easy way to translate the key codes to a readable key name? keyname(int) won't do, that's for Graal's default stuff only.

Edit: Found out that it matches Flash's ActionScript key codes pretty much, which I found a resource for. This is helpful, but I'd still like to know if there's a better way or how things work behind the scenes.

Seems to be mostly ASCII values with 256 or'd into the number if shift is down and the same with 1024 if Alt is down. I don't know much more than that.

Thought about that as well, but that doesn't seem to be entirely correct, because it's off for several keys for me.
