GC Title Belts

Back when Classic was up, we had several GC Title Belts who went out to players who won various sparring tournaments. We had the singles, doubles, and monthly tournament, though I've heard of a "hardcore" title back in the day.

Obviously we're a ways off from having monthlies and other spar tournaments again (though I did host an 8 person tournament this weekend,) but I had a few thoughts. I watched the UFC fight on saturday night, and while I was disappointed at the last few fights being sub-par, it got me thinking.

Was there any way we could incorporate a UFC style fighting/title system to Classic? For those of you who aren't familiar with it (not that I'm an expert, I just watch fights from time to time,) UFC stands for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where combatants compete in 'mixed martial arts,' which is a combination of a vast array of different fighting styles, such as Boxing, Karate, Brazilian Jujitsu, wrestling, etc. The fights are three rounds (or five for championship bouts,) where the winner gets 10 points and the loser gets 9 or less. Points are awarded by judges, for thing such as 'octagon control, effective striking,' and other stuff I'm not overly sure about. Regardless, basically if you beat up your opponent worse than he beats you up, you win the round. Obviously not all fights go the distance, with many fighters being knocked out, or forced to tap out via a submission move (as in your arm is about to be broken, or you're about to pass out.)

So, rambling aside, I was wondering if we could perhaps have a format similar to the UFC, where they have different weight classes (lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.) Perhaps we can have different classes based on spar rating, such as: 0-1599, 1600-1699, 1700-1799, 1800-1899, and 1900+. Each class can have their own title belt, and if a sparrer happens to rise/fall to another class, they must defend it within the day. Otherwise, the belts must be defended once every four days, and it is possible to acquire multiple belts by working your way up the ranks.

Obviously the flaw with the above ideas is that it'd require a ton of players in order to work properly, and there might not be enough people online of a certain class to host a proper tournament.

So I was just wondering, can anyone think of any way to possibly incorporate a UFC-styled system to our title belts? We could always have a singles/doubles tournament in addition to the above idea, and no matter what we'd certainly have a monthly. In addition, can you think of any more tournaments that we could award title belts for? CTF is the obviously suggestion, and I'd certainly like to have a massive CTF tournament or two, but other ideas could work too.

So there are some thoughts.

As always, any constructive input is welcome.

Spar rating is pretty insignificant in relation to true skill, and is probably the most lameable. Could possibly base ranks on the percentage ratio of wins to losses, sword accuracy, or something? (Throwing ideas out here) I'm not totally sure how a UFC title belt system would work with graals playercount as low as it is today, but a neat idea nonetheless.

As for additional belts aside from the existing GC sparring belts, could possibly have a belt used for the pit if that was ever hosted in tournaments.

More systems are just going to make things boring and mechanical-- just make it so the GC can host and the GC admin can set the new champion on RC like it was.

Let the best win, there's no need for "weight classes". Fighting sports and whatnot only have it because different weights create an uneven playing field. That's not a problem on Graal.

You could give laggers their own class to spar fellow 20 tile hoppers. hehe.

You know you just contradicted yourself.

When you lame spar rate you lame spar wins as well. Think, plan, write! (something in that context)

I usually like to assume spar wins/losses is counted in official arenas rather than any sparring level.

Keep it simple? You make ideas so horrible to read, it should be even more horrible to execute.
