There's a big difference between looking like crap and actually being crap.
When a big name game wants to have an ugly enemy, they don't just slap together some graphics. They make it a good looking ugly enemy, if you get what I mean. You can still tell it's an ugly creature, but it isn't an actual eyesore to the player.
