It's been a while since I've used Gentoo, but I do know that in one of the config files (I think it was make.conf, NOT SURE) I didn't include some things and I couldn't emerge several things. Maybe it was something with my stage 1 install...I did a stage 3 the next time and didn't have the problem.

That's your choice. We aren't debating GUIs/desktop environments here. Gentoo's default KDE install isn't as bloated as say Mandrake's...

Yeah they are good too. The Knoppix thing would probably be a good idea, but I've never tried it. Never tried Knoppix in general.
