i think what should allow you to choose a certain sub-class would be skills (A La AD&D 3rd edition) so, say you had fighting and say a crit hit skill (which uppes your chances of getting crits) you could become a monk.. fighting and Holy Affination ( better chances of the gods liking you and giving you stuff) you could be a paladin (or dark paladin, depending on god
) it should work like that...
