Although yes, Shawn is a mage, and a somewhat skilled one at that, the fact remains that he's 17 years old, foolish at times, and quick to let his emotions get the best of him in dire situations. I don't think it's good to have an Archmage that goes and hides for a week because he's mourning a death. You need a stronger personality than him.

Sorry if it disappoints, but that's just how he acts. (Though with the lack of other RPing lately, it's hard to tell. )
