You misunderstand. The code that is intended to slow the player also changes his direction of movement. I'm not talking about the parts where he bounces off walls, I'm talking merely about the section that applies friction.

It's easy enough already, assuming you have the sense not to disregard an area of maths that holds the key to your success.
Oh, and non-prefixed variables are volatile. If you require a variable to retain its value between frames, prefix it with a 'this'.
