For some game types like first person shooter personal servers make sense, since there can only be 2-16 players and the game rounds are short. Graal is a MMORPG where the servers must be up 24/7 and take a lot of bandwidth, which means they cost money, not many people can spend some thousands of dollars each month for that for free, and investing day and night to keep the servers up and running, including configuring the network, protect the computers against hacks and attacks.
Also we don't make money by selling the game client, we make money by charging for online time, so we need to limit the servers. |
