It was the imperialist crisis, the Berlin-Baghdad railroad, the entente and triple alliances, the ignorance of countries to use detente, the fact that the Austro-Hungarians annexed Bosnia and that the Russian's fellow slavic peoples were being opressed, the "power keg" of Europe (Balkans) and the "sick man" of Europe (Ottomans) as well as the naval race between Germany and Britain, they were all major factors before the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand before the war began.
