My understanding is that Jinni/Djinni/Djinn/Jinn are all different spellings of Genie... and Efreets/Ifrits/Whatever are separate beings (not Jinn). Like sort of the same thing but weaker. And Marids..... boy, you don't wanna tick THOSE dudes off.... they are the spirits which control the most massive volcanoes and hurricanes and such. Jinn fool around with the lesser elements and storms and Ifrits are...... ummm........ I forgot.
All this is Arabian myth, if anyone is interested.
