So it seems I was deceived by a trick of the eye! He doesn't accelerate only at the top of his jump, but all throughout the jump instead! Newton must be rolling in his grave

yeah. it was intentional. the point of the gronkle was to jump around, therefore an acceleration was necessary when adding in his flaps used for acceleration. once he hits the top, though, it all stops and instead he falls quickly by a rate of x2.
