But you could have it this way, more classes, but if you want to be anythign other than the basic ones we have now when you start you have to pm a staff member with some rp background on your character and if it's decent you can get it.

Uhhh....Who said you had to evolve? I just said you needed to go on a quest to search for a master/teacher/training for that class to evolve. I never said you HAD to do it.
Besides, there wouldn't be any disadvantages to evolving, really...
You would just gain some stats, maybe a skill or ability to use somethings. Not a huge difference is there? There's always a class that you can evolve to that remains the same as the original class, except more powerful.
Warrior-> Fighter
Barbarian-> Berserker
Sorcerer->Red Mage
Priest->Summoner
Thief->Master Thief
