The railroads on 2001 use save[] vars, though I personally would try settling for the database NPC controlled option. It would then suffer from some light delay when the player switches levels, but if you make a proper system in which a system NPC requests the information from the database NPC you could easily make it.
Plus it would mean there wouldn't have to be 1902841984 NPCs on the map just to make sure the whole place is connected. |
