I say if you want to duke it out with a dozen other people outside a sparring zone, then go right ahead. Just make sure you're doing it with other people who want to duke it out (a usual indicator is low AP or, obviously, if they attack you). I actually recommend depositing your stuff somewhere for safekeeping every now and then and entering the fray, whether or not you're a PKer. It can be a lot of fun.
