Yes it's been established that "hackers" that have all hats even guild hats cannot drop them because it's clientside..
It's possible to give yourself millions of pearls but when you sell them to the pearl guy he won't take them, because of the npc server. That's why you cannot drop those items.. So in other words, tell someone to drop a hat before the trade so you can make sure they aren't ripping you.
