For the software part, i would suggest
AnvilStudio for composition and Audacity for editing and mastering. But if you really want to make appealing music, and want do it in a reasonable amount of time, I would suggest a digital piano and a track recorder aswell.
The software is really just there for starting and finishing the music. You CAN do the whole process with a computer, but you probably will not be as productive, or like the result as much.
