I was shocked when I found out that Classic has more players than Era, but I think the reason why is because Classic iPhone is more casual, and Era is a little mroe hardcore. The majority of players on Classic iPhone who I ask why they don't like Era iPhone say something around the lines of "I hate that you have to pay $1000 a week for the potion to enjoy the game, I can't get anywhere without dieing and going to the hospital." I personally do not like the idea of the potions, I think if players just respawned on the spot without the potion and it was announced on Classic, Era would gain many more players. A few people just don't like the idea of guns, some wanted to stay on Classic to support their guilds. Other people just like all of the customization options.(You get more heads and hats on classic than on Era with the customization pack for free, and there is much more for sale.)
In summary, the best way to improve the playercount would be to release a bunch of hats,add some kind of beginners protection(goes away if you hurt someone) (or better yet, remove the potion/hospital), and give new players a better tutorial.
