I think the rarity is all that's needed too, Dusty. I can see how giving them super stats is easily justified (those who work hardest to get the items get the biggest reward, etc), but these stats are not some last-ditch effort to drive players. People like standing out and showing off, so it doesn't take more than appealing to that part of human nature to make players excited about something!

Plus the whole rubbing it in everyone's face thing is a reward itself.
