There's actually no need to animate lightning. You can efficiently create lighting by flashing for it just a fraction of a second(1 frame?) and making it fade out. After all, that's how real lightning works. Animating it striking would just make it look slow. I mean, sometimes it works, but I don't think it's really needed in this case. If one frame looks too lacking, can easily flip it for second frame.
