If you award people points for losing, it essentially becomes little league baseball. "Oh hey you lost, but here, have this meaningless trophy because we know you tried."

If you award points for losses, wins/losses become rather meaningless and it completely kills any penalty of giving out free wins. "Oh I'll just let people beat me a bunch of times because I get points from it anyways."
