Holding shift means I'm limited to horizontal/vertical. What if I want to make my lines 2:1(isometric)? What if I want 45-degree lines? What if I just want to draw a slightly angled line!?!?

I don't understand what you're trying to do here. It's all preference, I'm not trying to convert anyone, and I don't understand why you'd try to convert anyone either. Photoshop just wasn't made with pixel-art in mind, so of course its going to have flaws in that area.
I'm not trying to convert, but you keep naming things photoshop can do D:

Also, if you hold shift with the pencil tool you can click one spot, then click another spot anywhere to make a line in any angle you want, only holding shift while holding the mouse button will make straight horz\vert. lines.
