I was gonna say the same thing about the color count, but he said there was a palette to go along with it... so I guessed they weren't used.

No need to dither the stem. Stems on pumpkins are segmented, and I think the pre-dithering portrayed that fairly well. I'd also say ditch the dithering altogether as it doesn't really do a good job of portraying the type of texture a pumpkin has -- slick, smooth and a bit glossy.

Also, the face cut into the pumpkin shows does not show the depth of the actual object. You should be able to see the 'wall' of the pumpkin inside the face, as if it were actual carved out, instead of painted on.
